As an ardent America’s Got Talent enthusiast with years of watching under my belt, I must say that this season has been nothing short of exhilarating! The competition is stiffer than a stiff upper lip on a British gentleman during high tea, and the anticipation is palpable.
The competition on America’s Got Talent Season 19 is more intense than ever, as performers must give live shows to let the audience decide their fate, unless they are fortunate enough to receive a Golden Buzzer. This season, due to changes by Simon Cowell, each judge has one Golden Buzzer to press during the quarterfinals round. In the recent episode, it was Heidi Klum’s turn to use hers. She activated the buzzer for singer Dee Dee Simon after an outstanding live rendition of Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control.” Simon’s response brought back memories of what he told TopMob about not receiving a Golden Buzzer following his audition.
Fans of America’s Got Talent may recall Dee Dee Simon from June, as she left a lasting impact with her audition. It wasn’t only her powerful rendition of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls that stood out, but also the moment when she tossed off her heels, overwhelmed by the song’s emotion. In an earlier interview with TopMob, Simon admitted this was an impromptu action, and she repeated it during her quarterfinals performance. Additionally, Simon discussed the unpredictability of performing on America’s Got Talent, as one can never be certain about what appeals to voters from season to season.
During our conversation this past summer, I mentioned to Dee Dee Simon that there were many online commenters who believed she deserved the golden buzzer for her audition. However, since we were unaware that she would indeed receive a buzzer by late August, Simon’s response at the time was:
I saw that! I saw that, and then I also read somebody say, ‘Well, she’s not getting the golden buzzer because she’s gonna perform more.’ I said, ‘Is that how it works?’ [laughs] I feel like the golden buzzer would have been nice. It would have been nice. It would have been a moment. I would have got to hug whoever smashed that button for me.
Two months after that interview, Dee Dee Simon’s big moment finally arrived! She earned the chance to embrace Heidi Klum after activating the golden buzzer for her performance! It was quite symbolic; just as Simon removed her shoes for the quarterfinals, much like she did during the audition, Howie Mandel followed suit by taking off his own shoes in solidarity. Klum even took off her shoes and climbed onto the stage to celebrate with the former prison nurse turned singer.
Back in June, Dee Dee Simon continued sharing her thoughts on the dream of getting a golden buzzer:
Initially, I didn’t notice that there were no more golden buzzers on the table. However, as I began watching, I wondered where the golden buzzer was. People around me were pointing out that it wasn’t there, but I couldn’t see it myself. This left me a bit puzzled. If only there had been a golden buzzer, it would have provided an extra boost – something I could really use right now after such a long time.
It seems quite clear that her live quarterfinals act significantly enhanced her chances in the contest! Beyond Heidi Klum pressing the golden buzzer and Howie Mandel taking off her shoes, Simon Cowell expressed his belief that she’s “taken a step towards winning the entire competition,” while Sofia Vergara shared that she appreciated this performance more than her audition.

Dee Dee Simon was able to rejoice over her performance immediately since the buzzer assured that the results episode, airing only 24 hours after she performed, wouldn’t affect her. Not all third-round quarterfinalists have this advantage. She now shares a secured spot in the final with Hakuna Matata Acrobats and AIRFOOTWORKS, who previously received quarterfinal golden buzzers.
