After All Those Bridgerton Easter Eggs, Netflix Has Announced Season 4 Will Be Benedict's Storyline. I’m A Little Bummed

As a long-time fan of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series and a devoted viewer of the Netflix adaptation, I have to admit that I’m feeling a tad underwhelmed by the news that Benedict’s storyline will be the focus of Season 4. Don’t get me wrong, Benedict is a charming character with an intriguing backstory, but compared to some of his siblings, his romance seems rather predictable and lacks the same level of excitement for me.

As a longtime fan of historical dramas, I’m thrilled to hear that Netflix is continuing to add new seasons of Bridgerton to their lineup. Having binge-watched the first three seasons multiple times, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement when I hear about upcoming storylines. However, I must confess that my initial reaction to the news of Benedict’s Season 4 focus was underwhelmed.

If you are a book reader, you may know already that Julia Quinn’s novels go in this order:

  • 1. Daphne
  • 2. Anthony
  • 3. Benedict
  • 4. Colin (Penelope)
  • 5. Eloise
  • 6. Francesca (Romance 2.0)
  • 7. Hyacinth
  • 8. Gregory

Last season, the show created a stir by presenting Penelope and Colin’s tale out of sequence in Season 3 instead of continuing with Benedict’s turn. However, there were subtle indications throughout Season 3 that we would return to the usual narrative flow, as hinted by the ball at the end of the recent episodes. From a storyline perspective, it makes sense for Luke Thompson’s character to be next due to his long-standing role on the show and his individual arcs outside the Bridgerton family. Additionally, given Benedict’s age and the direction of Francesca’s storyline in the books, it seems only natural that he would be the one to follow. Nevertheless, the unexpected twist last season left some viewers feeling uncertain about the sequence of events.

On Tuesday morning, Netflix announced with a message saying, “Welcome to the wedding battle, Benedict.” This is an alternative way of expressing the original statement while maintaining its meaning and flow.

Regrettably, if you prefer watching shows instead of reading Ms. Quinn’s engaging novels, I must share that Benedict’s tale – though it has elements of an intriguing yet somewhat underwhelming coming-of-age experience – ranks among the least captivating narratives in the book. In essence, it mirrors the classic Cinderella story: there’s a masquerade ball, where a woman named Sophie Beckett secretly attends and ultimately discovers her “Prince Charming.” Through various twists and turns, these two eventually reunite. (If you’d rather avoid knowing more about the books, feel free to skip the following paragraph.) To provide some context, Benedict is initially hesitant to attend the ball due to his shyness and self-consciousness. However, he eventually decides to go and ends up meeting Sophie, who is unrecognizable in her disguise. Their connection deepens throughout the novel, as they navigate various obstacles that keep them apart. Ultimately, their love prevails, leading to a satisfying resolution.

As a dedicated fan of Julia Quinn’s “Bridgerton” series, I’ve been thoroughly impressed with how Shonda Rhimes and her team have brought the story to life on screen. Benedict Bridgerton, one of the central characters, has seen some significant developments that deviate from the books but add depth and nuance to his character.

In all honesty, Benedict is a pleasant secondary character in the Bridgerton universe for me, yet my enthusiasm is greatly piqued by the developments surrounding Francesca and Eloise. With regards to Francesca’s narrative, it appears marriage is in her future, which necessitates some waiting time. However, I can’t help but feel that we should have explored Eloise’s storyline next instead of continually jumping back and forth.

As a dedicated fan of the series, I must confess that Eloise’s narrative stands out as the most intriguing and peculiar one to me. Her storyline in Season 3 left me with a sense of anticipation, nurturing a secret hope that her departure from home would pave the way for an even longer and more captivating journey. Personally, I find Eloise to be the most intriguing character on this show, and I simply can’t wait to witness how her romantic arc unfolds on the small screen. Having followed her development throughout the series, I am eagerly biting my nails in excitement for what lies ahead!

Based on my personal experience and considering the circumstances at hand, dealing with Benedict next seems like the most logical and pragmatic choice. However, I must confess that this decision doesn’t fill me with unbridled excitement or joy. In fact, I feel a pang of reluctance or even apprehension. Perhaps it’s due to past experiences or personal biases that make me hesitant. But ultimately, I believe that focusing on Benedict now is the best course of action for the moment, even if my emotions don’t entirely align with this decision.
