After Canceling A Whole Bunch Of Shows, Now The CW Has Pulled The One I Was Excited About From The Schedule

As a dedicated fan who’s been through the rollercoaster that is network television, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment with each cancellation or rescheduling announcement. The CW‘s decision to pull The Librarians: The Next Chapter from the fall schedule and replace it with The Wranglers, an unscripted docuseries about cowgirls and cowboys, is a head-scratcher at best.

2024 has been a challenging year for CW fans as several shows faced cancellation, with the network possibly trailing only its sister network CBS in this regard. I was quite saddened to see the tearful farewell of Walker, alongside many other favorites. As we eagerly awaited the 2024 fall TV lineup for some positive news, it seems that fate has other plans. Regrettably, yet another CW show has been removed from the schedule, adding to our disappointment.

The sequel to “The Librarians,” titled “The Next Chapter,” was initially scheduled by the network to debut on October 24th. This was supposed to be a thrilling match-up against “Superman & Lois,” creating an exciting evening filled with fantasy. However, a recent announcement from the network has revealed that instead of “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” a new series called “The Wranglers” will air in its place.

Man, I’ve got to say, it’s really disappointing news. I’m a die-hard fan of the original The Librarians, both the movie series and the TNT TV show that starred Noah Wyle from 2014 to 2018. This new version seems to be blending elements of Wyle’s show with another network series, Sleepy Hollow. Essentially, it’s going to feature a librarian traveling through time and fixing the messes he creates, unlike Sleepy Hollow, where there were procedural crime-solving and Tom Mison in the lead role. In this new chapter of The Librarians, Callum McGowan will step into the limelight instead.

Despite the fact, the idea of blending an old-time character in a fish-out-of-water tale with a familiar franchise sparked my interest greatly when it was revealed. I was genuinely excited for this series, but now I’m puzzled as to why it’s being rescheduled since it seems more suitable to air alongside Superman & Lois rather than The Wranglers.

Interestingly, “The Wranglers” isn’t scripted; instead, it’s an eight-episode documentary series that follows cowgirls and cowboys as they live and work at Montana’s Circle Bar Dude Ranch. This shift in content occurs about six months after the CW acquired the rights to broadcast Hallmark’s previous production, “Ride,” which centered around a Colorado family striving to save their ranch. The timing also coincides with the revival of the western genre on TV and streaming platforms, as seen in shows like “Yellowstone” and others.

As someone who has spent years working in television production and following the industry closely, I can understand why some viewers might be puzzled by the decision to replace The Librarians: The Next Chapter with a new western series on the CW. From my perspective, the network’s choice to go in a different direction may have been based on a variety of factors, such as ratings performance, audience demographics, or even budget constraints.
