After Chicago Fire's Latest Episode Had Me Missing Casey, I Love David Eigenberg's Comments About The Longtime Cast Sticking Together

As a gamer with over two decades of TV-watching experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Chicago Fire has been a constant companion in my journey through the small screen. The show has evolved significantly since its debut, but the camaraderie and bond among the characters have remained unchanged – a testament to the enduring power of friendship.

The TV series Chicago Fire is making rapid progress towards Season 13 in the 2024 television lineup, and the fresh start under Chief Pascal (played by Dermot Mulroney) at Firehouse 51 has been a mixed bag. Severide (portrayed by Taylor Kinney) and their new leader have found common ground due to a shared adversary, resulting in an ending scene of the latest episode that made me yearn for Casey’s (Jesse Spencer) presence. However, during my recent conversation with David Eigenberg, he shared some intriguing remarks that will undoubtedly bring joy to longtime fans of the One Chicago franchise.

In the latest episode that aired on November 13, it served as the final installment before the winter break and the start of the new TV lineup in 2025. The conclusion saw Severide extend an invitation to Pascal to join him in a long-standing tradition – smoking cigars on the roof of Firehouse 51. Although Severide may continue this ritual whenever he deems appropriate, it brought back memories of the old days when Casey was on the truck, Severide on the squad, and Boden as chief. Jesse Spencer’s departure in Season 10 marked the end of a significant era.

During an interview with David Eigenberg at NBC’s One Chicago press tour, I pointed out his impressive tenure on “Chicago Fire,” given that not many casts have worked together for over 200 episodes and multiple seasons. He’s been playing Herrmann since the show’s debut, and he shared his thoughts:

Over the past 13 years, I’ve shared some incredible moments with Taylor, Christian, Joe, Tony, and Randy. It all started when I was 47, and now, at 60, we’ve been through thick and thin together. We’ve had an amazing journey that I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of.

Instead of being a series like Law & Order: SVU, where Mariska Hargitay has been the sole star since day one (with Ice-T coming in as a close second among original cast members), Chicago Fire boasts a different dynamic. Among the current Season 13 lineup, David Eigenberg, Taylor Kinney, Christian Stolte, Tony Ferraris, and Randy Flagler are veterans who’ve been part of the team since the very first season.

Jesse Spencer, too, was part of the original cast lineup, and throughout the seasons, there were numerous shared cigar breaks between him (as Casey) and Taylor Kinney (as Severide). Reflecting on their friendship brings to mind one of the presently strongest relationships at 51 – that of Herrmann and Mouch – who are both striving for promotions within the Fire Department.

I took advantage of the moment to query David Eigenberg regarding the bond between Herrmann and Mouch, as well as their contrasting study habits before their imminent tests. The actor responded with his thoughts on the subject.

As a fan, I’d say Mouch is meticulous in his approach, always giving tasks his all. On the other hand, Herrmann seems to prefer a more improvisational style, yet he knows what needs to be done when push comes to shove. It’s safe to say that Herrmann’s study habits aren’t top-notch; in fact, I’d describe him as somewhat disorganized, but Mouch is all about giving his best effort. As for me, I do my best according to the situation, while Mouch believes in giving it his all every time. [laughs]

Beyond the main cast who have been a part of Chicago Fire for thirteen seasons and more, there are other notable actors who have appeared in numerous episodes. Eamonn Walker played a significant role as Boden throughout the first twelve seasons, Kara Killmer portrayed Brett from Season 3 through Season 12, and Miranda Rae Mayo joined in Season 4 to embark on Stella Kidd’s journey towards becoming lieutenant.

In my gaming world, the team’s strength is almost at its peak during this modern period, although it’s a far cry from the days when Casey was around. Eigenberg himself noted that the cast of Chicago Fire is impressive even compared to earlier times.

Despite facing challenging days when life throws unexpected obstacles, we share a strong bond of friendship that keeps us going with frequent laughter. Unlike some industries where career pressures can be overwhelming, our team values camaraderie over individual achievements. We support one another through thick and thin.

At present, we’re just left to hope that the team stays as it is for the remainder of Season 13, given Truck has had its fair share of firefighters switching over recent seasons, a fact even Pascal mentioned to Stella. Moreover, the departure of Violet from Hawkins serves as a reminder that even when we least expect it, misfortune can occur. For now, take a peek at the trailer for the winter finale.

Don’t miss out! Tune into NBC on November 20, Wednesday, for the fall finale of Chicago Fire, Season 13, airing at 9 p.m. ET. This falls between the fall finales of Chicago Med and Chicago P.D., which are scheduled for 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET respectively. If you crave more One Chicago action during the winter break until they return in the new year, catch up on earlier seasons available on Peacock.
