As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of TV shows and movies, I must say that the latest addition to the FBI: International lineup has left me quite intrigued – Jesse Lee Soffer’s character, SSA Wes Mitchell. The fourth episode of Season 4, “Nothing Sudden About It,” not only showcased his knack for getting into tight spots (literally, with that tattoo parlor scene), but also offered a poignant emotional reveal about his past.
Spoilers ahead for Episode 3 of FBI: International Season 4 on CBS, called “Nothing Sudden About It.”
In the autumn TV lineup of 2024, the fourth season of FBI: International swiftly integrated Jesse Lee Soffer from Chicago P.D., casting him as SSA Wes Mitchell within the Fly Team. His debut episode was crafted to resemble a standalone pilot, and his character initially proved challenging for his new colleagues. However, by “Nothing Sudden About It,” the team appeared to operate seamlessly in resolving a case of a missing girl in Portugal.
Following the episode’s conclusion and the surprising revelation about Mitchell, it prompted a memory of Soffer discussing the Portugal shootings. However, let’s address the main topic first.
An Emotional Reveal About Wes Mitchell
In this streaming episode with Paramount+, I came across the initial scene where Wes Mitchell was at a tattoo parlor in Budapest, sweet-talking the artist while fibbing about his reason for being there. Frankly, it seemed a bit reckless of him to get a permanent tattoo before even securing an apartment. But by the end of the show, Vo’s heartfelt speech enlightened us all as to why he was opening up to her and the rest of the Fly Team.
In the tattoo studio, the episode briefly showed Mitchell’s new tattoos on his arm, which were badge numbers of colleagues he once worked with, his friends. He was more open this time when the artist asked questions about them. He revealed that the first one commemorates Alana Greggs from two years ago, and the second is for Mike Brooks who passed away in the Season 4 opener.
As a gaming enthusiast, when I chatted with Jesse Lee Soffer regarding why fans of Chicago P.D. should check out FBI: International, I hadn’t caught the specific episode he was referring to. Consequently, I couldn’t inquire about whether he now needs to sport fake tattoos on his arms whenever filming in short sleeves from hereon. However, upon reflection, there were hints he dropped that align with “Nothing Sudden About It,” and they appear to be rather straightforward once you rewind the conversation.
What Jesse Lee Soffer Told Us
Making the transition from NBC’s One Chicago, where he played Detective Jay Halstead for over 200 episodes, to FBI: International was a daring leap for Jesse Lee Soffer. In fact, he himself wondered about the implications of this move. Given that it required him to film in Budapest, I was curious about his thoughts on relocating. When I chatted with him, he opened up about his experience with the change of location.
Moving to Budapest has been an exciting and enjoyable experience for me. This city is truly captivating. I’m learning Hungarian in order to grasp bits and pieces of conversations on set, and I must admit, I can swear profusely in Hungarian! [laughs] However, today I won’t be using any of that here. Instead, I’m really enjoying the process. The challenging part is locating familiar comforts since Amazon doesn’t operate here as it does back home, which means no convenient home deliveries. [laughs] It can be a bit tricky at times.
The actor didn’t let any profanities slip out from his new vocabulary acquired during FBI: International, but it seems he’s mastering more Hungarian the longer he stays in Budapest. Moving to Europe has its complexities, yet he mentioned an on-set encounter that I later realized was a hint towards Episode 3. Softer elaborated further:
While working in Portugal and later Paris, there are instances when it feels surreal, as if I’m not actually at work. I find myself thinking, ‘Is this truly my job? I can hardly believe I’m standing on the shores of a Portuguese beach! How can all of this be real?’
Despite not fully enjoying the beautiful beach in Portugal due to their investigation into a missing teenage girl from the U.S., the new leading man of FBI: International certainly did. After watching the episode, I completely understand Jesse Lee Soffer’s enthusiasm about working on such a stunning location being an aspect of his job. It’s quite a contrast to the cold temperatures he would be filming Chicago P.D. in this season if he were still in One Chicago!
Catch up with Special Agent Wes Mitchell as the latest installments of FBI: International air every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, following FBI at 8 p.m. ET and preceding FBI: Most Wanted at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. If you miss the live broadcast, don’t worry – you can stream episodes the next day with a subscription to Paramount+.
