After FBI: International's Surprising Sparks Between Wes And Vo, I'm Thinking Back To Jesse Lee Soffer's Comments On Their Relationship (And Golf)

As a dedicated fan of the FBI universe, I must say that the latest episode of FBI: International has once again proven to be a thrilling ride filled with unexpected twists and turns. The case-of-the-week format is always engaging, but it’s the character development that keeps me coming back for more.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 5 of FBI: International Season 4, called “The Future’s Looking Bright.”

In the upcoming episode of FBI: International on the 2024 TV lineup, the team embarks on a mission in Poland to find a wealthy individual who was abducted while attempting to meet an attractive young woman he met online. They successfully solved the case, apprehended the culprits, and rescued the man, albeit with some injuries sustained along the way. A subplot involving characters Wes and Vo particularly caught my attention, making me eager for more in the 2025 TV schedule. This storyline reminded me of Jesse Lee Soffer’s interview with TopMob before Season 4.

What Happened With Wes And Vo In Episode 5

In the season 4 premiere of Fly Team, it was only Vo who knew Wes before his arrival in Budapest, but the title “The Future’s Looking Bright” hinted at a unique bond between them. It turned out they had connected on a dating site after Vo was persuaded to sign up by Raines. Their conversation about this fact was quite entertaining. When Vo brought it up, Wes joked about needing to change his age settings, and Vo playfully suggested he should minimize the golf-related talk in his profile description.

That wasn’t the end of the golf talk in the episode, though, as Vo brought him to a rented space held by a “blue chip CEO” who gave the Fly Team keys and only comes back a couple times per year. Inside the room? An elaborate virtual golf simulator setup, and Jesse Lee Soffer looked about as happy as Wes as he has all season… and really, happier than he did all of his final episodes on Chicago P.D. (You can stream this episode of International with a Paramount+ subscription.)

I found it intriguing to notice a spark between Wes and Vo when they weren’t on set, with Soffer and Vinesso Vidotto portraying their characters. However, it’s important to note that FBI: International isn’t planning to escalate this chemistry into a full-blown romance, as past attempts at inter-team relationships for Forrester and Kellett didn’t turn out so favorably. In fact, such romantic entanglements are less common in the FBI series compared to Soffer’s previous work on One Chicago.

Furthermore, the increase in chemistry between these two characters could possibly stem from their shared happiness following an intense event. Moreover, it’s possible that Wes might find chemistry with anyone he plays golf with at the simulator – it appears to be his preferred spot in Budapest now!

What Jesse Lee Soffer Said About Wes And Vo

During an earlier conversation in the fall, I inquired from Jesse Lee Soffer about why fans of Chicago P.D. should watch FBI: International, what led him to join the FBI on CBS, and the potential role of Wes as a mentor or teacher for Vo following the Season 4 finale. He responded:

Indeed, it’s clear he served as a challenging mentor for Vo, pushing her to her limits and demanding much from her. This was due to his firm belief that to excel in a role like an FBI field agent, one must be thoroughly prepared and competent. He molded her into readiness, and it adds a poignant touch to the narrative that she now respects him for it, feeling grateful for the initiation into this demanding profession.

The actor further explained that there won’t be any complications regarding Wes and Vo, as she was previously his trainee but has now evolved into a peer in her role as his agent. He hinted that she may act as his right-hand man in certain aspects. As Soffer mentioned earlier this season, Wes expresses trust in her and treats her accordingly. Essentially, the show International has sown the ground for a strong mutual trust between Wes and this individual that he might not share with the rest of his team as extensively.

In the recent episode, while it’s possible that sparks between Wes and Vo might have been more than just professional camaraderie, they may merely represent Wes trusting her as his key agent and confidant. I had a conversation with Soffer in October, long before this episode was released, but the dynamic between them reminded me of our chat after watching “The Future’s Looking Bright.

Additionally, I recalled a cheerful detour from our conversation following the Season 4 finale, where Wes’s mini golf game in his office was featured after the episode ended. When I enquired about whether Wes intended to retain the golf set, Soffer replied:

Yes, absolutely. [laughs] He needs something to pass the time in between cases.

Oh, how I wish I’d known back then that Wes would eventually have a chance to use a high-tech golf simulator somewhere in Budapest! Regardless of what lies ahead, I’m still finding delightful moments among the members of the Fly Team. In the last episode, there was a heartfelt exchange between Wes and Tate that actress Christina Wolfe hinted she might have seriously considered his proposal.

On Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern Time (ET), you can catch the latest episodes of “FBI: International” on CBS. This series airs right after “FBI” at 8 p.m. ET and before “FBI: Most Wanted” at 10 p.m. ET. Excitingly, CBS has announced that the FBI series will resume in 2025, so fans won’t have to wait much longer into the new year for more action!
