After I Watched Legend Of Vox Machina Season 3, I Totally Get Why Critical Role Stars Can't Wait For Fan Reactions

As a longtime fan of Critical Role and D&D, I’ve eagerly awaited the return of Vox Machina for quite some time now. Having had the privilege to watch all twelve episodes of Season 3, I can confidently say that the wait was worth it – and the comments from the cast about fan reactions make perfect sense!

In simple terms, “The Legend of Vox Machina” is coming back for its third season in the upcoming 2024 TV lineup, continuing the story from where Season 2 ended with the cunning dragon Raishan infiltrating Whitestone and proposing to our heroic band. It’s been over a year since fans with a Prime Video subscription saw that cliffhanger; now, having had the pleasure of watching all twelve episodes of Season 3, I can assure you it was worth the wait… and it’s easy to understand why the Critical Role cast’s comments about fan reactions are spot on.

Following the conclusion of Season 2, three dragons from the Chroma Conclave remain alive. Characters Vex (Laura Bailey), Vax (Liam O’Brien), Percy (Taliesin Jaffe), Pike (Ashley Johnson), Keyleth (Marisha Ray), Scanlan (Sam Riegel), and Grog (Travis Willingham) now encounter challenges greater than ever before. These trials take them not only to various continents, but also to distinct realms of existence. As hinted in the trailer, Pike finds a particularly challenging trip to literal hell, yet viewers can anticipate plenty of enjoyable moments throughout. Moreover, the animation seems more impactful this season.

The group responsible for Critical Role, both the TV show and the Dungeons & Dragons game it’s based on, manage to deliver a wealth of content in merely twelve episodes. Amazon Prime Video opting to release these episodes in sets of three, rather than all at once, ensures that viewers will have frequent discussions each week. During the Amazon Prime Video press day for The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3, I asked the cast about episodes they were eagerly anticipating fan reactions to, and Ashley Johnson responded with a resounding “Yes!” Travis Willingham then added his own excitement:

Absolutely!

Prepare yourselves, fans! There’s a chance Travis Willingham might catch your responses to various episodes in Season 3. He didn’t mention any particular episodes to avoid spoilers, but rest assured there will be plenty of intriguing content that will spark conversations after each group of three. Liam O’Brien shared a bit more detail about the reactions he can’t wait to see, saying:

Definitely the back end of the season, the final three. I can’t wait for just the lamenting.

Isn’t it characteristic of Vox Machina‘s series to have moments that call for sorrow? The last three episodes of both the first and second seasons were undeniably packed with action, and this dynamic is unlikely to stop in the upcoming season.

In response to my sharing that I found myself reacting somewhat unceremoniously during Season 3, Marisha Ray playfully referenced a well-known quote from the initial campaign: “We don’t do anything with grace or elegance!

When I asked the other members of the Critical Role group if there were any specific episode reactions they’d be particularly interested in seeing, there were prompt responses:

  • Taliesin Jaffe: “Oh yes.”
  • Laura Bailey: “Yes, yes! I can’t wait.”
  • Matt Mercer: “All of them.”

As a devoted fan, let me tell you that I’m just like any other D&D enthusiast who admires Matt Mercer. He’s the mastermind behind the original D&D campaign, and not to forget, he lends his voice to numerous characters in the Legend of Vox Machina series. From Sylas Briarwood and Trinket, to Orthax, Umbrasyl, and a host of Season 3 characters that I won’t spoil, Matt’s performances are simply unparalleled. In his own words:

Each installment boasts a defining moment, an exciting twist or turn, that both fresh viewers unaware of the unfolding events and longtime fans eagerly anticipating familiar highlights can appreciate. These unexpected surprises make every episode worth watching, as they offer something captivating for everyone.

Mercer has discussed exciting methods of retelling the original story that may astonish both newcomers and long-time followers, known as Critters. Sam Riegel provided additional details on the desired responses, words that are sure to excite any fans eagerly awaiting their favorite relationships to thrive. He stated:

In this particular series, I’m particularly looking forward to witnessing characters’ reactions towards the romantic moments and intimate scenes, as it’s always amusing to observe people becoming flustered.

Here’s a suggestion for paraphrasing:

  • Laura Bailey: “I can’t wait.”
  • Matt Mercer: “Watch Season 3 with your parents, y’all.”
  • Laura Bailey: “Do not!”

I’m not going to dip into spoilers here, but as a viewer, I’ll second Laura Bailey’s suggestion of not watching with parents! In all seriousness, fans have a lot to look forward to, and the wait is nearly over. The first three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 will premiere on Prime Video on Thursday, October 3.

Currently, if you find yourself needing a reminder about Season 2 or wanting to watch all episodes up until now, you can stream the first two seasons for free on YouTube, which is linked with Amazon Prime Video.
