Regardless of how you assess it, “Inside Out 2″ was an unprecedented blockbuster hit last year. Not only did it outshine all other films released in 2024 to become the highest-grossing animated movie ever produced, but it also received exceptional reviews, positioning it as the clear favorite for the Best Animated Film award at this year’s Oscars. Disney has acknowledged plans to develop a third installment in the series, and it seems that David Holstein, one of the co-writers of the sequel, is eager to contribute to future projects.
The sequel to “Inside Out,” titled “Inside Out 2,” revolves around the concept of Riley growing older and the changing emotions that come with it. Given that Riley is still a teenager, her future holds much unexplored territory, making the series ripe for further exploration. Screenwriter David Holstein shares his enthusiasm for several “Inside Out” sequels in the coming years, each focusing on different stages of Riley’s life. He elaborates…
Riley is 13, moving into her teenage years soon. There’s still a vast amount of life experiences ahead for her, and I’m eagerly anticipating this series will continue to follow her journey, particularly through motherhood. I hope that there will be significant narratives every few years, allowing us to delve into a variety of emotions, both familiar and new. No matter what lies ahead, it promises to be an exciting ride.
Holstein isn’t the one who first proposes that if the sequel of Inside Out 2 becomes successful by depicting Riley’s transition from childhood to adolescence, it could potentially happen again, or even multiple times, if each movie explores new challenges and emotions for Riley as she advances through different life stages.
For a franchise concept, this isn’t the most lackluster option by any means. If you’re envisioning Pixar’s latest franchise as “Inside Out,” then this is undoubtedly the suitable approach. And it could be absolutely spectacular! Picture a movie series chronicling a character’s journey from childhood to adulthood, all the way to becoming a parent herself!
Additionally, we’ve also followed a path that Pixar has previously seen some success with. Our Toy Story series (with Toy Story 5 in production) is an example. Although the primary characters don’t physically age, they have developed and progressed alongside the human characters who have grown older around them.
For the following two years, Pixar has scheduled their movies, starting with “Elio” this year, followed by “Hoppers” and “Toy Story 5” in 2026. Beyond that, we only know about the development of “Incredibles 3”. If news breaks about “Inside Out 3”, it wouldn’t shock many people, and would likely bring joy to numerous fans.
