After Jensen Ackles' Comment About Returning To Tracker, I'm Flashing Back To What Justin Hartley Told Us About Filming The Finale

As a fan who has witnessed the evolution of gripping TV dramas, I can confidently say that the anticipation for the return of Tracker in 2024 is nothing short of palpable. The news about Jensen Ackles reprising his role as Russell Shaw in Season 2 has only heightened my excitement, especially after reminiscing about Justin Hartley‘s captivating portrayal of Colter in the first season.

As a diehard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as the days tick by, leading up to the highly-anticipated return of “Tracker” next year, right where Season 1 ended with Colter confronting a shocking truth about his family heritage. So far, we don’t have much information about what lies ahead except for the fantastic news regarding the premiere date. What’s more, Jensen Ackles has confirmed that he will reprise his role as Russell Shaw early in Season 2! Reflecting on what the “Supernatural” alum has shared previously, I can’t help but be reminded of Justin Hartley’s comments to TopMob during the spring about filming the finale.

Jensen Ackles confirmed his return on Instagram, allaying any fears that his upcoming spinoff of The Boys would prevent him from returning to Tracker. His caption said this about filming his second episode of the hit CBS series:

I’m utterly smitten with this stunning urban landscape! A huge shoutout to Justin Hartley and the amazing team at Tracker CBS – it’s never less than exhilarating! Can’t wait until our paths cross again. Until then, take care and I’ll catch up with you when I do! 🤗

Indeed, the title clearly signals his comeback without revealing specific details about where Tracker continues for Russell and Colter. Ackles’ mention of Vancouver as a “stunning city” brought to mind Justin Hartley discussing filming on-site at the end of Season 1.

In the spring, I had the good fortune of having a conversation with the actor during the Season 1 finale. We discussed his reunion on This Is Us and the challenges Colter was going through at the time. He also shared insights about inviting Jensen Ackles to play his on-screen brother and juggling his demanding schedule as Tracker gained widespread popularity on network television.

After initially watching the climax, I felt inclined to rewatch it solely to savor the waterfront scenery more thoroughly as Colter concluded his quest to locate his friend’s child. Hartley remarked:

Wasn’t it stunning? There’s something almost unreal about its beauty, not in a negative sense, but as if it’s too perfect to be genuine. It truly is remarkable. And that’s what makes our show so special – we manage to make the locations play a role in each episode, particularly the last one which I found simply breathtaking.

The final scenes for “Tracker” were indeed filmed in a quaint town instead of Vancouver, yet the term “beautiful” consistently emerged when discussing the filming process. Recognizing that this stunning locale was also the scene of a tragic event in the finale, Hartley humorously remarked:

Oh, what a remarkable spot! Let’s hope, should the need ever arise, this would make an unusual yet extraordinary location for departure. Of course, we certainly don’t wish for any harm or danger; rather, we’re appreciating its unique character as a potential getaway.

Colter wasn’t laughing by the end of the hour after he learned some troubling news about his father and that his sister knew a whole lot more than she let on in the episode that featured Melissa Roxburgh as Dory Shaw. The finale concluded with Colter grabbing a surfboard and running into the water as the sun set, with The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” playing over the soundtrack.

The scene was breathtakingly beautiful, yet following the intense emotional rollercoaster of the episode’s events, it became clear that he deserved a small respite from his life, and going surfing seemed like just the thing. According to Justin Harltey, this was his personal interpretation:

It struck me as if he might be surfing, or perhaps he’s merely wading out into the sea and could end up sinking. [laughs] I’m not sure though. We’ll find out soon enough. Here’s hoping he knows how to surf, because that’s quite a swim to reach the other side.

I can hardly contain my excitement as we draw closer to diving back into Colter’s mind, following the cliffhanger from Season 1’s finale. Though Jensen Ackles hasn’t confirmed his presence in the Season 2 premiere yet, I’m optimistic that his episode will be one of the early ones this season. Furthermore, with the news of a cast member’s departure announced during the summer, it seems the show has some groundwork to lay for a character’s farewell.

The show “Tracker” is back on CBS for its second season this coming Sunday, October 13, at 8 p.m. ET. Until then, don’t forget to catch up by rewatching the entire first season, including the thrilling and picturesque finale, available through a Paramount+ subscription.
