As a gamer who has grown up with the hilarious duo of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele from their iconic show “Key & Peele”, seeing them drift apart professionally feels like losing a cherished childhood friend to another city. Their comedic chemistry was unparalleled, and watching Ducky and Bunny in Toy Story 4 was a joy that I’d love to experience again and again.
For quite some time, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have been teammates on one of the most acclaimed sketch comedy shows, “Key & Peele.” However, since their 2016 collaboration in the cat-themed comedy “Keanu,” they haven’t appeared together in a live-action project. While their partnership continued in animated form for films like “Toy Story 4” and “Wendell & Wild,” Keegan’s recent remarks about their relationship have raised some concerns, leaving me wondering if we’ll see them reunite for the upcoming “Toy Story 5.
In conversations about their shared career, Keegan-Michael Key employed a firm term to express his minimal interaction with his previous comedy partners, stating bluntly that they hardly communicated.
We don’t see each other that often anymore. Which is, to me, a tragedy.
In the grand scheme, it’s understandable that two married individuals might find their paths diverging slightly as life progresses, given they are both happily married (Key with Elisa Pugliese, and Peele with Chelsea Peretti). However, since they were instrumental in creating some of the most hilarious comedy sketches from the 2000s, this separation hits harder.
It’s quite clear to those who follow their individual careers that it might not be the norm for them to collaborate repeatedly, given their distinct paths in the industry. While Peele has predominantly shifted from acting to writing and directing horror masterpieces like “Get Out” and “Us”, Key has maintained a busy comedy career alongside his stage performances.
The Reboot star reflected on the duo’s shift in ideologies, saying:
Reflecting on our creative journeys, it seems our paths were intricately linked by our individual passions. He yearned to delve into the chilling realm of horror, while I sought to expand my repertoire with more dramatic performances, reflective of my schooling. Together, we ventured into uncharted territories, but it was that initial platform that provided us the foundation we needed for our subsequent growth.
It seems reasonable to express sincere appreciation for the hilarious content that both MADtv and K&P provided, as well as being glad that these projects gave them the opportunity to tackle bigger creative ventures. However, a less altruistic part of me yearns for them to keep collaborating indefinitely. And this leads us to…
Will Ducky And Bunny Be Together Again In Toy Story 5?
Despite Forky being the universally adored fresh character introduced in the fourth “Toy Story” movie, it wasn’t a big leap for Ducky and Bunny, the hilarious carnival-themed stuffed animals played by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, to potentially usurp the comedy throne. The duo was incredibly charming, with their rapid banter largely due to the fantastic chemistry between the two talented actors.
Although Toy Story 5 is expected to hit cinemas post-2025, it’s not entirely certain if Keagan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele will resume their roles. Interestingly, neither character appeared in the promotional artwork from Pixar that was unveiled at D23 in August, even though Forky was present.
It is anticipated that they will reappear, as they were part of Toy Story 4’s adventure and featured in its third and concluding post-credits scene. However, given that Jordan Peele is working on his upcoming mystery film and Keegan-Michael Key has a busy schedule, finding a suitable time in their calendars might prove to be quite challenging.
In the ideal situation, Ducky and Bunny could star in a standalone film spinoff, following closely after Key appears in one of Peele’s horror productions. Additionally, it’s hoped that this movie might contribute to ending world hunger. However, under more typical circumstances, we’ll simply need to stay tuned for any future announcements regarding the characters’ reappearance.
Toy Story 5 is set to arrive in theaters on June 19, 2026.
