As a longtime fan of DC Comics and animated series, I can confidently say that Aaron Pierre‘s casting as John Stewart in “Lanterns” has me more than excited! Having grown up with Phil LaMarr’s iconic portrayal of John Stewart from “Justice League Unlimited,” it’s fantastic to see the character finally making his live-action debut.
Aaron Pierre is set for a promising 2024 with roles in action thriller “Rebel Ridge,” available on Netflix, and voicing the title character of “Mufasa: The Lion King” currently playing in cinemas. To top it all off, he’s also been cast as John Stewart for “Lanterns,” the Green Lantern-centric series set within the new DC Universe franchise. While I’m already excited to see what “Lanterns” brings, learning about Pierre’s early involvement in the Stewart character has only heightened my anticipation for his portrayal of the character in the upcoming DC TV show.
Pierre admitted he hadn’t seen “Green Lantern” starring Ryan Reynolds, but he was familiar with the character John Stewart, thanks to an outstanding animated television show.
I think Justice League Unlimited might have been one of my first introductions to John Stewart.
It’s clear that many people, including himself, have learned about John Stewart from “Justice League Unlimited” or its predecessor, both of which featured Phil LaMarr as the voice actor for Stewart. Although Stewart had been a part of DC Comics history since his introduction in Green Lantern #87 in the early 1970s, it was the “Justice League” animated series, airing from 2001 onwards, that propelled Stewart into mainstream DC character status. In contrast to Hal Jordan, who is usually portrayed as the Green Lantern who helps form the Justice League, the creators of the DC Animated Universe opted for Stewart instead. This decision ultimately boosted John Stewart’s popularity in the comics.
Apart from being fantastic introductions to John Stewart for many viewers, “Justice League” and “Justice League Unlimited” have made him a favorite Green Lantern for numerous DC fans. Therefore, it’s long overdue that this green lantern-wielding character graces our live-action screens, even though there were initial plans for Wayne T. Carr to portray the character in “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”. If Aaron Pierre’s interpretation of Stewart bears any resemblance to Phil LaMarr’s depiction from “Lanterns”, it will be another aspect that I’ll enjoy about this character.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t contain my excitement about joining the cast of “Lanterns,” where I’ll be starring alongside Kyle Chandler, embodying the seasoned Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. Together, we’re mentor and apprentice, with me, John Stewart, learning the ropes from the veteran. Our roles as protectors of Sector 2814 take us on a journey to investigate a murder in the heartland of America. This investigation will unexpectedly intertwine with the larger narrative of the DC Universe. Joining Chandler and myself in this stellar cast are Kelly McDonald, Garrett Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan. The masterful Chris Mundy is serving as showrunner and co-writing alongside Damon Lindelof and Tom King, who’s particularly thrilled with the casting of Hal and John.
As a die-hard film aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that my much-anticipated project, “Lanterns,” is set to roll the cameras in early 2025! This cinematic marvel is projected to make its debut on HBO around the same time as the big-screen premiere of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” If you can’t wait that long for your DC Universe fix, fire up your Max subscription and stream the captivating “Creature Commandos”!
