The superhero genre remains highly popular, but it’s currently undergoing some changes. The previous DC Extended Universe (now available with a Max subscription) has concluded, and co-CEO James Gunn is shaping a fresh DC interconnected universe. During his meeting with director Zack Snyder, Gunn also shared on social media that he intends to create a crossover venture featuring Batman and Superman. I’m all in!
In Snyder’s interpretation of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Bruce Wayne’s cynical and aggressive demeanor stirred some debate. However, the excitement of watching these iconic heroes face off on the big screen was undeniable. One enthusiastic fan expressed their hope on Bluesky that James Gunn’s approach to DC Universe films eventually leads to a scene similar to this one. In response, the filmmaker simply replied with an optimistic sentiment.
Yes!
Indeed, it’s quite thrilling! It seems as though the DC Universe is moving towards a stage where Batman and Superman will share the screen and engage with each other. At this moment, though we have a good understanding of the initial series of projects, collectively referred to as “Gods and Monsters”, the exact timeline for their appearance together remains a secret.
Those who followed the DC movies sequentially will recall that the DCEU started introducing crossovers ahead of many other film universes, but subsequently shifted focus towards director-led standalone projects. However, with James Gunn now overseeing the studio’s creative direction, we can expect a more systematic narrative approach from him.
It’s clear that James Gunn’s recent comments about Batman and Superman, coupled with his picture posted alongside Zack Snyder, has sparked curiosity among DC fans. While some speculate that Snyder may return to work on a project under Gunn’s leadership, there’s currently no evidence to support this theory. Zack Snyder played a significant role in launching the original DCEU, and his supporters have persistently urged Warner Bros. to revive the SnyderVerse by allowing the director to create the follow-ups to Justice League. However, there’s been no hint that the studio is considering this financial commitment, given their focus on building a new shared universe in the meantime.
Although we have a sketch of upcoming DC films, there’s still much uncertainty about the expanding cinematic world. Our initial venture into the new series was with the Creature Commandos. Now, everyone is eagerly waiting to see what Gunn has planned for the first film: Superman. The expectations are high, but the trailer for Superman certainly appears impressive.
On July 11th, when Superman graces the big screen, all secrets it holds will be unveiled. However, unlike previous installments, you won’t see Batman making an appearance during its duration. Instead, this DC film – slated for release in 2025 alongside other movies – will introduce a variety of heroes sharing the stage with Clark Kent.
