After Outlander’s Three Minutes Of Pure Chaos, Sam Heughan And Caitriona Balfe Talk Claire And Jamie’s ‘Biggest Test’ Coming Next

As a dedicated fan who has been following this thrilling journey since the very beginning, I must admit that the latest twist in Outlander Season 7 is nothing short of mind-blowing! The show’s writers have once again proven their mastery in creating captivating storylines that keep us on our toes.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 11 of Outlander‘s seventh season, which aired on December 6.

In the television schedule for 2024, the much-anticipated second half of Season 7 of Outlander continues to surprise viewers with one shocking revelation after another. From Ian Murray’s tragic demise to William saving Rachel and Ian from Arch Bug, it’s been a rollercoaster ride! It’s debatable whether the series has ever been more tumultuous than the cliffhanger ending of Episode 11. Jamie came back from the dead, Claire and Lord John tied the knot, William discovered his true biological father, and when redcoats stormed the house, Jamie took Lord John captive! Actors Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan recently spoke with TopMob about these events and what they may mean for the future.

It’s true that Episode 11, titled “A Hundredweight of Stones,” was a rather serious episode, as viewers didn’t know for certain that Jamie was alive. The unexpected twist came when Claire and Lord John shared an intimate moment together. However, nothing could prepare us for the dramatic events in the last three minutes. When I interviewed the stars of Outlander during Starz’s Season 7B press conference, I couldn’t help but ask about that intricate sequence with all its moving parts. Sam Heughan revealed:

The scene there is certainly filled with turmoil, as you can see. With Jamie’s arrival, being pursued by the redcoats, uncovering fresh details, and William’s presence, it’s undeniably chaotic. And I believe the fallout from this event will ripple through the entire season, possibly even into Season 8. This rift that forms will significantly affect Jamie, Claire, and John Grey. These characters have a challenging journey ahead, and I suspect this may be one of the toughest trials for Jamie and Claire’s relationship in quite some time.

It seems unavoidable that a significant divide will occur, as Sam Heughan expressed, when Jamie discovers Claire has remarried Lord John following the news of his supposed death in Philadelphia. This predicament leaves Claire inadvertently bound to two living husbands, but without the Outlander-style time travel twist that previously complicated her relationships with both Frank and Jamie (and potentially Jamie’s spirit).

It’s not surprising that Caitriona Balfe found Claire’s relationship with Lord John to be “extremely unexpected,” which prompted Sam Heughan to quip that “she has a knack for choosing them,” and Balfe to joke that “she enjoys amassing rings and spouses.” However, Balfe later expressed her genuine feelings about Claire’s recent marriage.

I must admit, I was taken aback when I first read the scripts – it was quite a surprise, even for this stage of the show. It’s fascinating how sometimes you get hit with a curveball like that, and it’s not what you’d expect at all. As an actor, it’s a challenge to process such twists and find our way through them. Working with David Berry on those scenes was simply outstanding, he’s truly a talented performer. Moreover, we were fortunate to have Vanessa Coffey, our intimacy coordinator, who provided invaluable support during that time as well.

As a devoted Outlander fan, I can’t help but appreciate the thoughtful approach taken by the production team. They wisely decided to keep intimacy coordinator Vanessa Coffey on board following Sam Heughan’s introduction. The unconventional sex scene between Claire and John, where they both pictured Jamie in their minds, was undeniably filmed differently from most other intimate scenes in the series. This alteration, considering the emotional depth and mourning of these characters, seems entirely fitting.

Caitriona Balfe continued, conceding that fans had a good hunch Jamie wasn’t truly deceased, a suspicion bolstered by the trailer released along with the premiere date, as well as cast members posting messages after finishing Season 8 filming. In simpler terms, she admitted that it was quite obvious to fans that Jamie wasn’t dead due to the hints given in the trailer and social media updates from the actors.

This scene presents a significant challenge for Claire because the news she receives is arguably the most devastating she’s ever experienced. Yet, as the viewers are aware that Jamie Fraser isn’t truly gone, it feels like an arduous task to make this grief feel authentic and grounded. However, I believe it results in a very dramatic and difficult episode to act in.

Given that Season 7B is still in progress and Sam Heughan hinted at a deepening conflict, it seems we can expect more intense drama and obstacles ahead, despite not all episodes ending as intensely as “A Hundredweight of Stones.” To get a glimpse of what’s coming next, take a look at the preview for Episode 12 featuring Jamie openly among the living.

1) Don’t forget to catch the upcoming episode of Outlander, scheduled for December 13 at 8 p.m. ET on Starz. Over the course of seven seasons, fans have been cheering on Claire and Jamie, but it’s hard not to feel sorry for Lord John when he gets caught up in their turmoil whenever they meet. Nevertheless, it’s quite an exciting spectacle!

Aside from fresh episodes every week on Starz, you have the option to stream past episodes by subscribing to Netflix right now as well.
