After Seeing How Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender's Toph Actress Reacted To Her Casting News, I'm Convinced She's The Perfect Choice

As a lifelong Avatar: The Last Airbender enthusiast who grew up watching the original series, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of anticipation when it came to casting Toph for Netflix’s live-action adaptation. After all, this character is more than just an Earthbender; she’s a beacon of strength, resilience, and wit that left an indelible mark on my adolescence.

You can’t have Season 2 of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” without Toph being there, it just doesn’t work. So, I’ve been eagerly anticipating who would be joining the cast for Netflix’s live-action “Last Airbender,” especially for the role of our beloved Earthbender, Toph. Now, we finally know who will portray The Blind Bandit. After witnessing the actress’s reaction to the news, I am confident that she is the ideal choice to bring my favorite character in this series to life.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Has Found Its Toph!

For those unaware, Toph is a character from the series who possesses the unique ability to manipulate earth as an Earthbender. She’s visually impaired yet incredibly skilled, joining Team Avatar to instruct Aang in his bending abilities. Toph is known for her spirited and tenacious personality, her strong will, and sharp wit – making her one of the standout characters in the show. Finding an actress capable of portraying such a dynamic character was no small task.

Nonetheless, Netflix has declared that Miya Cech will embody the renowned character, and here’s a clip of her performance:

I kid you not, the wait to see who ended up playing Toph, a certified Avatar icon, has been killing me. So, to finally know who is playing her is a relief. What makes it even better is I think she’s a perfect choice!

Miya Cech’s Reaction To The News Proves She’s A Long-Time Fan And The Perfect Toph

Before we get into my thoughts on the matter, Miya Cech’s filmography speaks for itself and shows that she’s more than qualified for this gig. She played Teenage Amy in Netflix’s award-winning hit Beef, and she had roles in the shows The Santa Clauses and Surfside Girls as well as movies like You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. Oh, and did I mention she’s only 17 years old?

Moreover, the casting choices for Avatar are exceptional. Gordon Cormier captures Aang’s playful youth and wisdom, while Kiawentiio brings the necessary grace and determination to portray Katara. Ian Ousley perfectly encapsulates Sokka’s humor, and Dallas Liu convincingly plays the troubled Prince Zuko. Interestingly, these actors not only deliver performances that honor the animated series but are also passionate fans of the original material.

Miya Cech checks these boxes as well. She seems to have the spunky energy Toph demands. However, she’s also a big fan of the OG show, as she proved with her Instagram caption reacting to the news:

This secret, which I’ve had to keep for five years, has been the most challenging one I’ve ever faced. (🤜💨🪨) For years, I’ve yearned for the chance to audition for the role of Toph, and that desire was kindled over a decade ago when I fell in love with the original ATLA series. Now, I find myself in disbelief! A heartfelt thank you goes out to @netflix and my extraordinary cast mates who have embraced me like family from day one. It’s hard to believe that I’m uttering these words- “I am Melon Lord!

It seems that if my calculations are correct, she’s been a fan since she was just seven years old (same here!), and she’s been striving for this role which I admire. What truly thrilled me about her casting, though, was the closing remark:

i. am. melon. lord.

“This reminds me of a really funny inside joke from Season 3 of the animated series, where Toph has a moment that showcases her mix of strength and silliness in humor. It’s quite amusing!

So, yes, Miya Cech, you are Melon Lord, you are Toph, and I can’t wait to see you on screen!

Regretfully, you’ll need to be patient as we won’t be able to watch Toph and the crew in Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s second season yet, as it’s still in the early stages of production. But don’t worry! You can pass the time by looking up Netflix’s 2024 release schedule and enjoying both the live-action and animated versions of this cherished series with a Netflix subscription.
