After Seeing Jamie's Reaction To John's Fate In Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2, I Can't Stop Thinking About Wes Bentley's Tragic Comments Regarding Their Relationship

As a dedicated fan of Yellowstone, I must confess that this latest twist has left me utterly bewildered and intrigued! The revelation of John Dutton’s death, and the strong implication that it was no ordinary suicide, has set the stage for a captivating tale of betrayal, power struggles, and familial bonds.

Hey fellow gamers, beware! Massive spoilers for the premiere of Yellowstone’s Season 5B are coming your way! If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t worry, you can catch up on The Paramount Network during re-runs every Sunday at 8 p.m. ET as new episodes drop each week. Happy watching!

In the initial scenes of Yellowstone’s highly anticipated Season 5B debut, it was disclosed that John Dutton has passed away. The circumstances seem to suggest suicide, but there are strong hints that it was actually a murder, with Jamie Dutton’s associate, Sarah Atwood, being the suspected culprit. Given these developments, I found myself constantly pondering Jamie’s emotional response to his father’s demise and Wes Bentley’s poignant reflections on how John’s feelings towards his character might influence Jamie moving forward.

Before John Dutton died, he stated his opinions of his kids in Season 5, Episode 5. He said he pitied one (likely Kayce), missed another (probably Lee), envied Beth, and regretted the other one. That regret is more than likely over his adopted son Jamie. So, when I interviewed the cast of Yellowstone about the new episodes, I asked Wes Bentley about this opinion Kevin Costner’s character had and how it impacted Jamie. In response, he said:

As a gamer, I can relate: John’s take on me, specifically, is like the elusive power-up I can’t seem to grab. It’s not about the validation I get from him, but rather, it feels like a missing piece I’m yearning for. The twist is, I’ve bent over backwards, even transformed parts of my core identity, yet it still remains just out of reach. This conundrum drives me in every scene, adding an extra layer of challenge to the game we call life.

In Season 5, Episode 9 – the first of six upcoming episodes of “Yellowstone” on the 2024 TV lineup – we see Jamie dealing with his father John’s demise. He appears to grieve deeply over his father and sheds tears at the end. Despite asking Sarah Atwood about hiring someone to target his family members following Beth’s declaration of war against him, it appears that he genuinely believes his dad took his own life. However, it seems rather clear to me that this was a hit orchestrated by the woman he had been romantically involved with.

In the given episode, it appears that Jamie’s quest for approval from John is causing confusion within him. Despite his desire to bring down his family, there’s no denying the sadness he feels about past events. For five seasons, Jamie had been excessively loyal to his father, who molded him into the man he wanted, yet harbored resentment – a lawyer. Now, Jamie seems uncertain of his path.

Reflecting on my own experiences and relationships, I found that the dialogue with the actor portraying the character from American Beauty resonated deeply with me. His insights into his character’s complex bond with his father and loyalty towards him gave a profound context to Jamie’s emotional response to John’s predicament. As someone who has grappled with family dynamics myself, I could relate to the intricate tapestry of emotions that such relationships can weave.

Is it possible that his unwavering loyalty sometimes works against him, and this tendency is deeply ingrained in him or a defense mechanism? When you pretend to be someone other than yourself, you rely on those who define your identity for you. And John fits that description perfectly. I believe he struggles without that persona. I’ve never managed to encounter another side of him.

It’s clear that Jamie is struggling to find his way, and it seems like Sarah might be exploiting this situation. By leveraging his loyalty, she appears to have been manipulating him, and many believe her actions contributed significantly to the fall of John Dutton.

I’m pondering over how John’s opinion of Jamie and Jamie’s allegiance towards John might influence his future actions in Season 5B. Since he’s now deprived of the man who molded him into his current self, a person he was compelled to become, I’m intrigued to find out if Bentley will take revenge against the other Duttons or if he’ll crumble under the pressure and allow Sarah to manipulate him.

Regarding the ongoing “Yellowstone” series on Paramount Network every Sunday at 8 p.m. ET, both scenarios are plausible. If you’re interested in understanding how Jamie and John’s relationship unfolded to its tragic state before the patriarch’s demise, you can catch up by streaming Seasons 1 through 5A of this Western show with a Peacock subscription.
