After Sofia Vergara Blew The Other AGT Judges' Minds With Wild Golden Buzzer Choice, I Love Her Explanation For Her Pick

As a long-time fan of America’s Got Talent, I’ve seen my fair share of incredible acts that have left me speechless. But the latest episode on July 16 during Season 19 truly took me by surprise. Sofia Vergara hitting her golden buzzer for Schumacher, a Japanese comedy duo, was an unexpected and delightful choice that left everyone in shock.

Spoilers ahead for the seventh round of America’s Got Talent auditions in Season 19.

In the seventeenth episode of Season 19 of “America’s Got Talent” in 2024, which aired on July 16, marked the final opportunity for the judges to press the coveted golden buzzer, following the introduction of an additional allowance this year. Among the numerous hopefuls displaying exceptional vocal abilities and heartfelt narratives, it was Sofia Vergara who seized the moment. The contortionist seemed like a possible dark horse contender, yet Vergara surprised everyone by choosing a two-man act that doesn’t fit neatly into any category. Even her fellow judges were taken aback, but Vergara offered a compelling rationale behind her decision.

In this episode, Schumacher, the Japanese comedy duo composed of two men, were the recipients of the golden buzzer. Their act featured one of them assuming the role of an animal by contorting himself onto all fours. Towards the end, they transformed into a giraffe by combining their shapes. At first, Sofia Vergara appeared skeptical and asked if it was a “dance, a puppet show, a transformation, or quick changing.” However, just before she surprised Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Simon Cowell with the golden buzzer, she clarified, “It’s neither, it’s something else entirely.”

I find myself at a loss for understanding. What I once believed to be ludicrous now seems senseless to me. I can’t grasp the concept, but with all my heart, I believe you truly deserve this!

After hitting the golden buzzer and with confetti showering down from above, Vergara joined Schumacher on stage as everyone else was still taking in the surprise. Terry Crews, the host, didn’t waste any time and asked her why she made the surprising choice that left the world stunned. I found her explanation so captivating that I rewatched it right away. Vergara shared the reasons behind her golden buzzer press.

I don’t know! That’s the most fun thing we’ve had all day, all week!

I personally enjoy it when judges press the golden buzzer for underdog performers who may not be certain to progress with the consensus of the entire panel, allowing them to simply enjoy the experience instead. In this instance, Sofia Vergara selected an unusual act that didn’t have a strong likelihood of receiving a “yes” from each judge. Moreover, most golden buzzer recipients during this season have been singers and dance groups. Thus, an act that embodies – as put by Vergara – “nonsense” will undoubtedly add excitement and unpredictability to the live shows. Could I press the golden buzzer for Sofia’s unexpected choice?

While the other judges seemed taken aback, I sensed no indication from them that Vergara had chosen poorly or that Schumacher would be on Cowell’s list of disliked acts. Surprising choices like those made by “AGT” Season 18 champions Adrian Stoica and Hurricane often catch us off guard! If you haven’t seen Schumacher perform yet, check him out below:
