During the inauguration of President Donald Trump on Monday, country artist Carrie Underwood had to change her performance to a cappella style because of technical issues with the sound system.
After Donald Trump’s inauguration speech, the past winner of “American Idol” stepped onto the stage to sing a version of “America The Beautiful” accompanied by the Armed Forces Chorus. However, for more than a minute, there was no sound coming from the stage. A brief melody started but soon stopped abruptly due to some technical difficulties in the room.
At Underwood’s request, she led the audience in singing a patriotic tune a cappella after saying “if you know the words, lend me your voice”. The gathering, which included President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, enthusiastically participated, harmonizing with her. Following her rendition, Underwood exchanged pleasantries with both Biden and Trump, who seemed to offer supportive comments upon their encounter.
Last week’s announcement that Underwood was scheduled to perform at the inauguration led to a wave of surprise and, in some instances, anger among her fanbase on social media platforms. Numerous disheartened comments were shared across various posts from aggregator accounts such as Pop Base, with a few supportive posts also appearing intermittently.
As a gamer, I can see why fans are reacting this way since Carrie Underwood has generally stayed away from politics and previously made some jabs at Trump. Back in 2017, during the CMA Awards, she took a playful dig at Trump alongside Brad Paisley through a parody song on stage.
It’s not just Underwood who’s under fire for participating in inaugural events; even Snoop Dogg, once a vocal critic of Trump, received backlash from fans after performing at the Crypto Ball in Washington D.C., which took place before Trump’s inauguration. Known for his outspokenness, Snoop had previously released a video for his “Nightfall Remix” of BADBADNOTGOOD’s “Lavendar,” where he shot a toy gun at a Trump look-alike.
Donald Trump took his oath on Monday at midday, as part of an indoor inauguration event held in the Capitol Rotunda instead of outside, because of severe Washington D.C. weather conditions.
