After 'The Brutalist,' Brady Corbet Next Film Is a Horror Western

As a cinephile who has had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of modern cinema through the lens of Brady Corbet’s exceptional career, I find myself utterly captivated by his upcoming projects. With a lifetime spent immersed in the industry, from his early days as a child actor to working alongside some of the most revered directors today, Corbet is truly an auteur to be reckoned with.

Director Brady Corbet, fresh from working on A24’s upcoming movie titled “The Brutalist“, is already planning his next venture. After completing “The Brutalist“, a film focusing on an architect (Adrien Brody) escaping post-war Europe in 1947 and chasing the American Dream, Corbet aims to explore something entirely new. In a feature for The New Yorker, he hinted at his subsequent project, a horror-Western that delves into immigration themes, promising it will leave viewers feeling shaken. As per The New Yorker’s report:

This upcoming project, taking place primarily in the 1970s and early 80s, will explore Chinese immigration to California as its central theme. The narrative tone will have a more relaxed feel, while drawing inspiration from both horror and Western genres.

It was during a joint Halloween viewing of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre that the director and his filmmaker partner, Mona Fastvold, conceived their idea. They were joined by their 10-year-old daughter Ada and other friends for the event.

Corbet, an avid movie buff particularly fond of the 1974 slasher film “Corbet,” didn’t consider the potential impact on his 10-year-old daughter when choosing to watch it. On the other hand, Fastvold, who hadn’t watched “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” was taken aback by Corbet’s opinion that such a violent film about cannibals could be suitable for a child. In an interview with The New Yorker, Corbet expressed his surprise, stating, “She said something like, ‘You’re crazy to think this was okay.’

In my perspective, considering Ada’s extensive experience on film sets, I assumed she’d easily spot the difference between authentic and artificial. However, the exceptional skill put into the crafting left even the most hardened viewers like us questioning the reality.

As the creator of this year’s critically-acclaimed film, “The Brutalist,” which has me poised to sweep the Oscars in categories such as Best Director, Best Picture, or Best Screenplay (or any combination thereof), my initial thought upon witnessing its successful reception was, “Now I have a chance to create something that will truly stir up controversy.” It appears to be the perfect moment to jolt viewers out of their comfort zones. I believe they’re ready for it.

Corbett’s upcoming horror-Western movie is part of a growing body of work for the seasoned filmmaker, who started his acting career in Hollywood as a child. Kicking off his professional journey with the 2003 release Thirteen, Corbett has since collaborated and learned from renowned contemporary directors like Gregg Araki, Michael Haneke, Lars von Trier, Olivier Assayas, Ruben Östlund, and Noah Baumbach in projects such as Mysterious Skin, Funny Games, Melancholia, Clouds of Sils Maria, Force Majeure, and While We’re Young.

In 2015, his first directorial venture was unveiled with the movie “The Childhood of a Leader“, earning him awards like the Luigi De Laurentiis Award for Best Debut Film and the Orizzonti Award for Best Director at the Venice International Film Festival. Subsequently, he released the experimental film “Vox Luz“, featuring Natalie Portman and Jude Law. His latest production, “The Brutalist“, has been nominated for several Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture – Drama, while Corbet himself is nominated for Best Director and both Corbet and Fastvold are contenders for Best Original Screenplay. “The Brutalist” will be screened in theaters starting this Friday, December 20.
