As a sports enthusiast with a penchant for all things basketball and a soft spot for a good laugh, I can wholeheartedly vouch for the entertaining spectacle that is Mr. Throwback. Having followed Steph Curry’s career from its humble beginnings to his meteoric rise in the NBA, it’s a delight to see him take on a new role that showcases both his acting chops and basketball prowess.
For fans who cherished the 2024 Paris Olympics, there were hardly any moments more thrilling than when the U.S. Men’s Basketball Team secured gold against France. In a nail-biting climax, basketball legend and future Basketball Hall of Famer Stephen Curry single-handedly decimated the French team and their home crowd with an electrifying performance. Just before sealing the game, Curry drained three consecutive three-pointers and scored nine points in a row. This victory held extra significance for Curry and his longtime comrades, who were disappointed by not winning gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Of course, those tracking Stephen Curry’s career on The Golden State Warriors since he was drafted in 2009 know he is a natural entertainer with charisma through the roof. Curry has parlayed his likable celebrity into several TV shows, including the reality golfing competition series Niiice Shot With Stephen Curry. However, to truly grasp how amusing Curry is onscreen and how much fun he’s able to poke at his public image, those who followed the NBA star during the Paris 2024 Olympics need to check out Peacock’s new sitcom, Mr. Throwback.
Who Is Stephen Curry?
Born to ex-NBA player Dell Curry, it’s widely thought that Stephen Curry will one day grace the Hall of Fame as a stellar NBA star and perhaps the best shooter basketball has ever seen. Unlike his brother Seth, who played for Duke University, Stephen chose Davidson College in North Carolina for his college basketball career. Following his graduation in 2009, he was selected seventh overall (First Round) by the Golden State Warriors during the 2009 NBA Draft.
In partnership with teammates like Clay Thompson and Draymond Green, Stephen Curry transformed the Golden State Warriors from a consistently losing team into one of the NBA’s top contenders, winning four championships under coach Steve Kerr in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022, with him being named the MVP of the 2022 NBA Finals. Given his past performances under the limelight, it’s no wonder that Pally had only positive comments about Curry’s acting abilities when discussing the movie ‘Mr. Throwback‘.
Beyond his impressive career achievements, Steph Curry has also been honored with distinctions such as two league MVP titles, ten All-Star appearances, and twice being named Sports Illustrated‘s Sportsperson of the Year (in 2018 and 2022). He was awarded the All-Star MVP in 2022, NBA Clutch Player of the Year in 2024, and many more accolades. In 2024, Curry added an Olympic Gold Medal to his collection after missing out on the top prize during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (held a year late due to COVID-19). The manner in which he secured the Gold Medal further enhances his legendary status.

Following a remarkable comeback against Serbia that wiped out a 17-point disadvantage in the Olympic semi-finals, Curry raised his performance to unprecedented levels in the gold medal game against France. Despite the French fans cheering for their team consisting of Curry, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant, the U.S. team’s lead over France started to shrink significantly in the final quarter.
With less than six minutes remaining, France narrowed their gap to just three points. However, Stephen Curry took control and delivered a decisive blow, often referred to as his “lights-out” finish. After sinking three consecutive three-pointers to widen the U.S. lead, Curry attempted an audacious shot from beyond the arc while being doubled teamed – a move that would typically be considered miraculous for most players. But for Curry, it was just another routine play. The ball arched high and found its mark as planned, and Curry responded by giving the French crowd his signature “night-night” gesture. In the end, the U.S. emerged victorious with a score of 98-87, with Curry leading all American scorers with 24 points.
Following triumphs at the FIBA tournaments in 2010 (Turkey) and 2014 (Spain), where he clinched gold medals, Curry secured his first Olympic Gold Medal in 2024. Luckily, basketball enthusiasts can continue to enjoy Curry’s charming on-screen chemistry in Mr. Throwback, a fresh Peacock Original series that premiered during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Mr. Throwback Has Humor and Heart
The television series titled “Mr. Throwback” is a Peacock Original production and mockumentary sitcom created by Adam Pally and David Caspe. This six-part first season premiered on their platform on August 8, 2024. In this show, Adam Pally portrays Danny Grossman, a struggling sports memorabilia dealer who once played basketball with Stephen Curry in the 6th grade. To alleviate his growing financial woes, Danny attempts to swindle Curry out of valuable sports memorabilia. In a side-splittingly self-referential performance that plays with his public image, Curry’s self-awareness provides plenty of big, gut-busting laughs in the sharp satire.
Desperate for $90,000 to pay off his debt, Danny comes up with a ridiculous plan to make Curry get hold of his valuable sports equipment. However, Danny’s ex-wife Samantha, portrayed by Ayden Mayeri, has no interest in his harebrained money-making scheme, which only increases the stress on Danny to persuade Curry to support him financially. Other characters include Kimberly, Steph’s PR manager, played by Ego Nwodim, Lucy, the BTS camera operator, and Mitch Grossman, Danny’s controversial father, who is portrayed by Tracy Letts.
In the opening episode of Mr. Throwback, things take an unexpected turn when Danny attempts to secretly snatch Curry’s basketball jersey in the locker room following the Chicago Bulls’ loss against the Golden State Warriors at the United Center. However, he gets caught by Steph and Kim, leading him to concoct a lie about his sick daughter named Charlie (Layla Scalisi), which only serves to deepen his web of deceit. The series’ central conflict unfolds when Curry encourages Danny to return to basketball in the episode “Why Not Me,” as it juxtaposes Danny’s dishonest financial schemes with his newfound ambition and optimism. Fundamentally, the narrative serves as a heartwarming reminder of the significance of childhood friendships and never losing sight of one’s roots.
Why Mr. Throwback Is Worth Watching
Instead of Curry’s golfing competition series, fans of the Olympic Games should tune into Mr. Throwback for its fantastic basketball action. This show offers an exclusive look into NBA arenas, granting access to locker rooms that are seldom shown on a mockumentary TV show. In Episode 3, “The Slump,” Steph Curry grapples with a confidence-draining shooting slump, providing valuable insights into the patience, perseverance, and resilience required to conquer such difficulties. In Episode 4, “The Only Way Out is Through,” a charity basketball game in Toronto unexpectedly brings Steph and Danny closer together both on and off the court.
In addition to its captivating basketball narrative, Mr. Throwback employs a humorous mockumentary approach that invites introspection and an off-the-cuff performance. Structured within a lighthearted documentary interview setting, the series permitsCurry to portray himselfand poke fun at the typical sports interviews fans recognize. A significant aspect of its charm stems from Curry’s faith in Danny, while Kim is fully aware of his mischief. The humor arises from their contrasting dynamics, with Danny taking advantage of Curry’s lack of knowledge about his deception to push the limits of his memorabilia scam. As Curry begins to uncover Danny’s deceit throughout the series, he satirizes his persona by transforming his optimism into anger.
Following the adoration of viewers during the 2024 Paris Olympics, Mr. Throwback has been showcasing Stephen Curry’s acting talent and basketball skills. This mockumentary is produced by the same network that broadcasted the 2024 Paris Olympics, so fans with recorded games on their DVR can enjoy both simultaneously. To top it off, Mr. Throwback is an entertaining basketball TV show that humorously portrays a playful side of Steph Curry, just as amusing as his most memorable basketball moments, such as winning the gold at the 2024 Olympiad.
Mr. Throwback is available to stream on Peacock.
