The two-year anniversary of the death of Stephen “tWitch” Boss occurred in December, and although those closest to the renowned dancer – who gained prominence on So You Think You Can Dance before serving as Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show DJ – have had some time to come to terms with his suicide, fresh wounds have been reopened. Boss’ wife, fellow dancer Allison Holker, has written about her husband in her upcoming memoir and has faced criticism for some of her disclosures. Boss’ mother, who posted an emotional message about tWitch after his passing, is among those voicing their opinions, as well as one of DeGeneres’ producers.
Allison Holker’s memoir This Far: My Story of Love, Loss and Embracing the Light includes details of her experience surrounding her husband’s death, including the moment she learned of his suicide. She also told People that afterward she’d discovered a “cornucopia” of drugs, including mushrooms, pills and “other substances.” Stephen Boss’ mom Connie Boss Alexander took issue with some of the things being said about her son, posting a message to Instagram that read:
We’re deeply upset over the false and offensive statements being circulated about my son, Stephen Boss. The latest articles disseminating unfounded information have crossed all boundaries of decency. As his mother, I won’t let these allegations pass without a response. We will not remain silent while his reputation and heritage are damaged. He doesn’t deserve this, and our children don’t deserve this either.
Connie Boss Alexander didn’t directly name Allison Holker, but she explicitly expressed her displeasure with the “inaccuracies” circulating about tWitch in recent days. In her post, she went on to say…
Over the past two years, I’ve chosen solitude and kept a low profile to safeguard my family. My main concern has been about healing and maintaining relationships with my grandchildren. However, when I came across these horrific allegations concerning my dear Stephen, I understood that it was time to break my silence. Our family is dedicated to preserving his name and legacy, and we are resolute in upholding his honor.
Stephen Boss’ mom expressed her worry not just about the impact on her son’s reputation, but also on his kids – Weslie (age 16), Maddox (age 8), and Zaia (age 5). This concern has led her to speak out publicly for the first time.
Andy Lassner, executive producer of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, also referenced Allison Holker’s comments about tWitch’s alleged drug stash, speaking from his own experience as a addict. In an Instagram Story he said that while he’s sure there were things he didn’t know about Stephen Boss’ life, “his energy wasn’t the chaos of addiction – it was the calm that so many of us fight for.” Lassner called him “an absolute king” who deserves to be remembered that way. You can see the producer’s full statement below:
Beyond Twitch’s mother, another individual, claimed to be a cousin, voiced an opinion as well. This person responded to a Twitter post criticizing Allison Holker for failing to safeguard her husband and their kids. In the post, they wrote:
He wasn’t an addict. He smoked weed and was actively trying to quit. He wasn’t some junkie.
Before updates from Stephen Boss’ mother and Andy Lassner, Allison Holker addressed criticism she faced on her Instagram Stories on January 8, clarifying that her objective was solely to assist others. In a post (as reported by Entertainment Weekly), she stated: “My intention has always been to help people, and I am saddened that it’s being misconstrued.
Perhaps, by openly recounting our entire experience, I aspire to aid someone else who may identify with Stephen’s story. Through my sharing, I hope they might recognize potential warning signs I overlooked earlier, so they can take action in time.
Allison Holker’s book This Far is set for release February 4.
The passing of Stephen “tWitch” Boss at the age of 40 left a deep sense of sorrow among his fans, fellow dancers, friends, and other celebrities. Even two years later, the pain of his loss remains palpable for many. I wish healing for all those affected.
