Brace yourself for spoilers about the crossover between Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, if you haven’t watched the initial part of this exciting event yet, you can catch up by streaming the first half on Hulu with a subscription.
The initial TV lineup for 2025 kicked off brilliantly with an amusing blend of “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Although the majority of characters from both shows had humorous storylines that highlighted the contrast between the comedies set in Philadelphia, Glenn Howerton’s Dennis character was almost entirely absent. Therefore, I eagerly anticipate that when the “Sunny” half of this crossover is aired, they will delve into his camera-shy character.
In the “Volunteers” episode of Abbott Elementary, the team arrived to fulfill their obligatory community service hours. Dee assisted Janine and made a play for her boyfriend Gregory. Mac assumed the role of Ava’s self-appointed vice president and attempted to charm her into approving their work hours. Charlie received guidance from Barbara, Melissa, and Jacob in learning to read. It’s worth mentioning that Frank, who wasn’t involved in scenes with the children, ended up trapped in a cage during an argument with Gregory and Mr. Johnson regarding raccoon care in the school garden. Interestingly, Sunny’s character, Dennis, played by Glenn Howerton, didn’t have a significant storyline in this episode.
Upon discovering that cameras were capturing everything happening at Abbott Elementary, he swiftly opted out of participating in the documentary. Throughout the show, he was frequently seen dodging the cameras or making a hasty exit.
The Unraveling of the Tale: How the Crossover Between It’s Always Sunny and Abbott Elementary Transpired: ‘It Developed Rapidly Beyond Being a Mere Footnote or Humor’
In the episode, there was a comical scene that left me curious about part two of this crossover. I’m keen to find out what he was doing beyond the school’s camera view, and since ‘It’s Always Sunny’ isn’t a documentary-style series, I have high hopes they’ll reveal those hidden antics.
1. Perhaps, he bypasses one camera and creates a self-made documentary on the day’s events, or we could tag along with him during his service hours, causing unexpected mayhem. In either case, I’m hooked! (Informal)
2. It’s possible that he outmaneuvers a camera to produce a personal documentary about the day, or we might accompany him through his service hours, stirring up drama behind the scenes. Whatever the choice, I’m intrigued! (Formal)
It seems quite plausible that his adventures will play a significant role in the upcoming episode’s storyline. This assumption arises because Quinta Brunson, creator and lead actor of Abbott’s, mentioned on Late Night with Seth Meyers that the second part of this crossover occurs simultaneously with the first half.
If you’re a fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you’ll find an episode where they depict events from a different perspective compared to their arrival at Abbott. Essentially, this means you get two versions of the same story.
In my opinion, with the R-rated version of this amusing crossover, it’s likely that the main focus will be on Dennis. It would be quite entertaining to watch him causing mischief and negatively influencing the students as he moves in and out of different classrooms.
In the latest episode of “Abbott,” it’s unclear exactly what he was doing, but there could be several possibilities: perhaps he aids Dee in her scheme to steal Janine’s boyfriend, maybe he finds a way to trap Frank inside that cage, or maybe he even gets into a scuffle with Morton. With so many possibilities, it’s clear we need answers right away!
We may not find out the answers right away since we’re unsure when the second half of this crossover will be broadcast, as Season 17 of It’s Always Sunny in the Paddy’s Pub gang has yet to announce a premiere date, but it is expected to air sometime in 2025.
Consequently, it’s only a matter of time before we witness the second part of this fantastic blend. In the meantime, I’ll be brainstorming about the mischief Dennis might have caused off-screen and eagerly anticipating its portrayal on-screen during the crossover episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary, which will air on FXX.
