For someone who’s watched Marvel movies sequentially without delving into the comics, it’s likely they aren’t aware of Howard the Duck. This is understandable given his limited appearances in the Guardians of the Galaxy films and a quick cameo in Avengers: Endgame. Nevertheless, the animated series What If…? featured various iterations of Howard in different episodes. However, one might ponder if the sarcastic, avian character could ever star in a standalone Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
as a movie critic, I’ve had the pleasure of following Seth Green‘s portrayal of Howard the Duck since his debut in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Recently, during a conversation with Comicbook, Green shared his insights on this feathery character. In his view, Howard thrives when presented in brief appearances rather than being the central figure of his own tale. To quote him directly:
“Howard is best served in small portions and doesn’t require a spotlight story all to himself.”
This perspective not only reflects my own feelings but also adds depth to the character, making me eagerly anticipate Howard’s future appearances!
It’s clear that Howard suits the Guardians universe well, and this was an excellent chance to catch up on his storyline. We’ve also produced several episodes in the What If…? series, which allowed us to explore some exciting concepts. Howard is a humorous character, one who doesn’t necessarily require their own leading role to shine. It remains to be seen where he will best fit for a wide audience appeal.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’d like to express some reservations about dismissing Howard the Duck so quickly, given his long-running tenure in Marvel Comics titles since his debut in 1973’s Adventure into Fear #19. This character was brilliantly crafted by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik. However, I can’t forget the less-than-stellar 1986 film adaptation of Howard the Duck, often cited as one of the worst movies ever made. Despite some positive outcomes for actress Lea Thompson following the movie, it’s understandable why Marvel Studios might be cautious about bringing Howard back into the spotlight, even with Seth Green’s portrayal aligning more closely with the comic book version.
Seth Green appears to find that situation acceptable, yet it doesn’t mean he no longer wishes to voice Howard. Instead, he seems satisfied with the character staying on the sidelines for now. Green appreciates how Howard was utilized in the Guardians movies and What If…? episodes, but he’s uncertain about finding ways to significantly elevate him into a more prominent role.
Apart from sharing his views, I’d add that it seems quite unlikely we’ll see Howard the Duck in the MCU for a while, if at all. With James Gunn now leading DC Studios, there’s no clear sign of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 being made by another director (although Vin Diesel hinted at a potential Groot movie). Unless the Russo brothers have plans to include Howard in the next two Avengers films or another project comes up where he can easily fit, I can’t think of any other suitable opportunity for him right now.
However, should I turn out to be mistaken in the future, rest assured, TopMob will keep you informed. In the meantime, enjoy streaming all of Howard the Duck’s Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances by subscribing to Disney+.
