As a film enthusiast with over two decades of experiencing the thrilling rollercoaster ride that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I must say, the unique approach taken by “Agatha All Along” is a refreshing change of pace. Coming from someone who’s seen every single MCU film multiple times, it’s intriguing to witness a series that doesn’t feel like an extension of a larger narrative saga.
Jac Schaeffer, the showrunner of Agatha All Along, shares why this series has less Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) connections compared to typical Marvel Studios projects. Since the inception of the MCU in 2008, its interconnected storylines have been a significant draw for fans and have kept audiences invested in the franchise. Shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier directly set up Captain America: Brave New World, while She-Hulk: Attorney at Law references Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. However, Agatha All Along has fewer direct connections to the MCU compared to shows like WandaVision.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Agatha All Along’s showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained that the series doesn’t have many direct ties to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe because the character Agatha Harkness (played by Kathryn Hahn) has only been in WandaVision and not any of the movies. This allowed them to create a self-contained story for Agatha All Along.
In “Agatha All Along,” we didn’t have as much connection to the MCU as in “WandaVision” since Agatha hadn’t been seen in any previous films. This gave us more creative freedom, as we weren’t required to fit the story into existing canons. Instead, our focus was on integrating Agatha seamlessly within the narrative we were creating and enriching the stories that had come before. It was less about how it would impact future projects and more about how it could strengthen the tale we were telling while respecting what had already been established. Unlike “WandaVision,” where we had to balance the character’s extensive backstory and connections, in “Agatha All Along,” Agatha stood on her own as an individual character.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I must confess that while the interwoven tapestry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was initially captivating, it’s grown increasingly complex in recent years, and some find it daunting to join the franchise midstream. The intricate continuity that has been built up over the years seems to have weighed heavily on the Star Trek franchise, necessitating a reboot in 2009. Interestingly, Agatha All Along’s strategy of minimizing MCU connections appears to have borne fruit, as the series has garnered significant popularity on Disney+. The only prerequisite for audiences is that they’ve watched WandaVision, making the show more inviting to viewers.
Agatha Might Be Important to the MCU’s Future
Although Agatha All Along may not seem closely tied to Marvel’s previous stories, it could be subtly setting up future events. For instance, in the fourth episode titled ““If I Can’t Reach You / Let My Song Teach You”“, a character named Mephisto was mentioned, who is speculated to appear in the upcoming series Ironheart, due out on Disney+ in 2025. The show has kept the identity of the character played by Joe Locke, known as The Teen, under wraps. However, many fans believe he could be Billy Kaplan/Wiccan from The Young Avengers. Marvel seems to be gradually leading towards The Young Avengers, with series like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Hawkeye, and The Marvels also contributing to this narrative. Agatha All Along could potentially be another piece in this intricate puzzle, with connections that may only become apparent later on.
It appears that Agatha All Along could be the middle part of a planned trilogy by Marvel, following WandaVision and leading up to the Vision series. Numerous storylines within the cosmic, street-level, and mystical branches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are expected to intersect in Avengers: Doomsday, as various heroes take on Doctor Doom. Just like the Guardians of the Galaxy who were initially separate but became integral to the main Avengers storyline, there’s a possibility that Agatha Harkness could be incorporated into the plot of both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The question then arises: Will Agatha join forces with or oppose Doctor Doom?
