Ahead Of Captain America 4’s Release, Anthony Mackie Reached An MCU Milestone That Only Scarlett Johansson And A Few Others Have Hit

As a dedicated Marvel fan who has followed the journey of Anthony Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson/The Falcon, since his debut, I can confidently say that it’s about time he got his due! With the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World,” Mackie is not just stepping into the lead role, but also into the coveted position of executive producer.

Anthony Mackie has made a significant impact in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Starting with his introduction as Sam Wilson/The Falcon in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in 2014, he’s become a consistent figure within the extensive franchise. In 2021, the character advanced significantly when Sam Wilson assumed the role of Captain America. Mackie is now slated to lead “Captain America: Brave New World,” and prior to that, he achieved an accolade that only Scarlett Johansson and a select few MCU veterans have attained.

The forthcoming Marvel film featuring Anthony Mackie’s character, Wilson, will be his first solo outing, making him part of an elite group in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside stars like Robert Downey Jr., Brie Larson, and Chadwick Boseman. However, Mackie has gained another unique accolade – thanks to his work on Brave New World, he is now credited as an executive producer for this movie by Walt Disney Pictures. This is a significant achievement, given that very few actors in the Marvel franchise have been bestowed with this title.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), only three other actors have taken on Executive Producer (EP) roles in movies. Scarlett Johansson serves as an EP for both “Black Widow” and the upcoming “Thunderbolts.” Chris Hemsworth has the same credit for “Thor: Love and Thunder,” while Ryan Reynolds will produce the 2024 movie “Deadpool & Wolverine.” In terms of TV shows within the franchise, Tom Hiddleston is an EP on “Loki,” and both Samuel L. Jackson and Oscar Isaac have similar roles for “Secret Invasion” and “Moon Knight,” respectively.

It’s not surprising that Anthony Mackie has been appointed an Executive Producer on his latest superhero movie, given his extensive involvement with Disney’s vast comic book-based intellectual property. Being named an executive producer often means he had a significant influence in creative discussions for the film. Additionally, this isn’t Mackie’s first venture into producing, as he has previously produced films such as Io, Outside the Wire, The Banker, and most recently, Elevation.

Based on all reports, the actor-producer has clearly enjoyed taking the reins of an MCU film after a while. This comes after Tom Holland, who played Spider-Man, criticized him back then due to the lack of a Falcon film. In fact, earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con, the star of Half Nelson playfully teased Holland about it. Despite his enthusiasm, the Detroit actor also stood up for the title Brave New World, as he believes it signifies a fresh start not just for his character but also those around him.

In the fourth installment of the Captain series, Sam Wilson finds himself uncovering a wide-spread conspiracy that pits him against U.S. President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Previews for Brave New World suggest an action-packed, dramatic, and espionage-laden film, as well as the MCU’s introduction of the Red Hulk. There is much anticipation surrounding the Julius Onah-directed film, and I’m optimistic it will meet these expectations.

It’s interesting to learn about the discussions Anthony Mackie was involved in, being a producer of that movie. With actors increasingly taking on producing roles in films, especially within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I hope this trend continues.

Be sure to catch “Captain America: Brave New World” when it hits cinemas on Valentine’s Day, February 14, as part of the 2025 film lineup. Alternatively, you can follow the Marvel movies in sequence by subscribing to Disney+ and streaming the initial three films from the “Captain America” series.
