As a die-hard fan who has followed the firefighters of Chicago Fire through thick and thin for over 250 episodes, I can confidently say that Season 13 promises to be a rollercoaster ride filled with emotional highs and lows. The cliffhangers left hanging at the end of Season 12 have me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the resolution of Severide’s desire to start a family with Kidd and the fallout from Damon’s bombshell reveal about being Severide’s half-brother.
Fans of Chicago Fire didn’t have to wait in suspense over a dramatic life-threatening cliffhanger last May, but they were left on emotional edges due to several unresolved issues. Fortunately, these will be addressed soon. The third series of One Chicago’s lineup, Fire, is set to debut Season 13 in the 2024 TV schedule on September 25th. Showrunner Andrea Newman recently chatted with TopMob about exploring Severide’s longing for a family with Kidd and delving deeper into the shocking revelation concerning Damon from the finale of Season 12.
In the final episode of Season 12 during the spring, amidst heartfelt speeches for Boden and Severide discovering that Benny Severide had another secret child, the veteran Squad lieutenant proposed to Kidd the idea of starting a family together. Initially shocked by his suggestion, Kidd might have been more surprised due to him bringing it up in the morning before they started work, contributing to her stunned reaction.
It’s commendable that Severide recognized upfront that deciding to start a family would be a greater challenge for her than for him. During my conversation with Andrea Newman regarding the upcoming season, I pointed out this admirable trait and inquired if we could expect more of such developments. Her response indicated that indeed, we will witness more of this aspect unfolding.
Yes, certainly. A significant aspect of their relationship as a couple involves navigating the unique challenges that come with one deciding to start a family. For instance, there’s an intrigue in examining the differences when a male firefighter expresses the desire to start a family versus a female firefighter. We’re interested in understanding the distinct paths they’ll take and how these journeys might differ for each. Particularly with Kidd, we want to explore her thoughts and feelings about this new family endeavor, given her complex family history and lack of strong parental role models. In essence, we’re asking: Can we start anew? Can we figure this out together? Do we have the strength and wisdom to raise a family? And what implications will this have for Kidd? It’s a fascinating topic for both characters, given their troubled pasts.
Chicago Fire has often portrayed firefighters juggling parenthood throughout its run, ranging from the Herrmann family to the challenges faced by Dawson and Casey, Cruz and Chloe adopting Javi, and having a newborn son. However, an aspect that hasn’t been explored yet is the dilemma of two Chicago Fire Department (CFD) officers contemplating starting a family and the complexities that would arise. Given Stella Kidd’s impressive performance as Truck lieutenant since her promotion, it seems that this could be an intriguing direction for the show. The showrunner further explained:
Is she considering taking a break from playing Wonder Woman, or is it possible that she can handle anything? Essentially, we’re wondering if she needs a rest or if she can manage everything.
It’s intriguing to anticipate how long it will take for us to find out more about Kidd and Severide’s emotions regarding starting a family. As for the cliffhanger from the end of Season 12 finale (now available on Peacock with a subscription), Andrea Newman has provided some insight:
Instead of venturing too far beyond that point, we intend to focus on the immediacy following that event, particularly Severide’s response and his conversation with Kidd about it. We’re maintaining our timeline within this moment, so to speak, just after that incident occurs. We have a short span there, but then we quickly advance six weeks into the future, which aligns with where other shows are progressing. In those six weeks, we take a brief look at Severide and Kidd dealing with the consequences of Benny Severide’s son’s situation before moving forward again.
As a devoted fan, I’m excitedly anticipating the upcoming premieres of One Chicago’s trio, where it seems that each show will tie up their threads by the end. Notably, the new showrunner for Chicago Med, Allen MacDonald, has hinted at this for the medical drama. However, I’m particularly intrigued by how Fire plans to navigate the aftermath of last season’s nail-biting cliffhanger, as teased by Andrea Newman.
At a pivotal point, Severide finds himself grappling with the idea of starting his own family, only for a half-brother to suddenly appear in his life. This brother, whom he was not previously acquainted with, requires his attention and care, causing tension since he kept the relationship secret from Kidd, his superior. The initial episodes will delve into the complex issues arising between Kidd and Severide regarding this newcomer, Damon, and the nature of their relationship that Severide must navigate.
Is it possible that Chicago Fire wouldn’t be the same without its intricate web of family and firehouse relationships, coupled with the weekly challenges? The series has been on for thirteen seasons because of these very elements! As for Stellaride, their exploration of starting a family seems to be an exciting plot point in the upcoming fall season.
