Ahead Of Elsbeth's Return For Season 2, Showrunner And Carrie Preston Explain Why Nathan Lane Was The 'First Choice' To Play A Suspected Killer

As a devoted fan of CBS’ intriguing series, I’m absolutely thrilled about the return of Elsbeth to our screens! The anticipation has been building ever since the tantalizing announcement that Nathan Lane would be gracing us with his presence as a potential murderer in the Season 2 premiere.

CBS’s 2024 TV lineup during its premiere week is brimming with new premieres, including the comeback of the series Elsbeth, which will air on Thursday evenings. The Season 2 opener, scheduled for October 17, will see stage and screen veteran Nathan Lane as a suspected murderer. In an interview with TopMob, lead actress Carrie Preston and showrunner Jonathan Tolins explained why Lane was the ideal choice to launch the second season.

The Season 2 premiere is called “Subscription to Murder,” with Nathan Lane starring as an obsessed opera lover by the name of Phillip Cross, who Elsbeth suspects murdered a man for being disruptive in the theater. Fans will have to tune in to the episode on October 17 to see how right Elsbeth is about Cross, but considering a promo featuring what looks like Nathan Lane wielding a weapon and the fact that Elsbeth‘s big-name guest stars are often the bad guys, he seems likely to be the culprit.

It’s clear beyond doubt that Nathan Lane won’t be appearing in the show Elsbeth, reprising his role from The Good Wife. You can catch up on this series by subscribing to Paramount+. During a conversation before Season 2, I talked with the showrunner and the lead actor, and Jonathan Tolins revealed the reasons behind Lane’s casting in the premiere.

It’s not much of a story! I wrote the script, and we sent it to him, and he said yes a few hours later. I’m very, very thrilled. He was our first choice. Nathan’s big break in theater was playing the part of Mendy in Terrence McNally’s play The Lisbon Traviata, who was an obsessed opera fan, who’s not exactly the same character as Philip, but it was someone who really knew their opera. I just knew Nathan would hit it out of the park, and so I was very excited. I’d met him, but I’d never worked for them before, and I was so thrilled that he said yes, and he was as good as we hoped.

Nathan Lane might not be an opera singer, but he’s undeniably a seasoned performer, renowned for his theater work that spans from Jonathan Tolins’ mentioned play to popular productions like “Guys and Dolls” and “The Producers.” The showrunner wasn’t the only one who praised Lane’s performance in “Elsbeth”; Carrie Preston, who teared up during filming the Season 1 finale scenes for Elsbeth, expressed:

Our showrunner Jon Tolins wrote the episode. He himself is a huge opera buff, so he knew that that’s how he wanted to start the season, and he wrote the role for Nathan. It was very much tailored for Nathan, and also tailored for the world that Jon is so, so familiar with. He was very specific about what he wanted to do with the episode, with the writing. We already had great, great stuff to play, and then Nathan just came in completely grounded in this character. I don’t think I ever saw him even look at his script. It was already just so in him, and that’s saying something, since we don’t get the scripts until a week or two before we start. It was pretty impressive.

It turns out that the notion that Nathan Lane would make an ideal candidate for the first murderer in Season 2 proved accurate! Carrie Preston revealed the impact of Lane’s portrayal during the early stages of the second season.

As a gamer, teaming up with someone who matches my skill level is an absolute blast! It pushes me to improve even more, and since it was the season premiere, I was well-rested and eager to embark on this exciting adventure. The episode was masterfully directed by Nancy Hower, who’s no stranger to our show, having directed the Season 1 episode featuring Gina Gershon and her plastic surgery storyline. It was great working with such a talented team again!

To put it simply, Elsbeth appears ready for an impressive debut this season, as she won’t be encountering the challenges from the first season caused by the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike. I had a chat with Jonathan Tolins just before the Season 2 premiere, and he mentioned that they were already working on Episode 8 and developing the storyline for Episode 12.

Compared to my experience, the Elsbeth crew faced a significant gap between shooting their pilot and its recent debut this year. As such, I was curious if Carrie Preston found her work routine altered due to a prolonged hiatus between filming. She revealed:

It was good because we had the momentum from finishing [Season 1]. We had about two months off, between finishing Season 1 and starting Season 2. That was enough time to catch our breath, and just knowing that we had this marathon to run. The writers were able to break the season, get all the worlds of each episode lined up and ready to go by the time we started shooting. We’re in the thick of it now, and it’s going really well.

The long wait for Season 2 is almost done! You can catch the premiere episode on Thursday, October 17 at 10 p.m. ET. Following the debut of Kathy Bates’ Matlock on CBS, our show will air in its time slot. For a sneak peek at Nathan Lane’s intriguing character, be sure to take a look!
