Ahead of the Game – Pet Clash is a strategy-slash-idle sim where you collect quirky woodland creatures to become the sort-of Monkey King

  • Gather resources as a would-be king
  • Collect pets that look suspiciously familiar
  • Auto-battle your way through the forest for more goodies

Greetings and welcome to Ahead of the Game, a show where we share details about a forthcoming game, which you can already experience before its official launch! By tuning in to this series, you’ll get an opportunity to test out games early, whether it be through Soft Launch, Open Beta, Demos, or other methods.

Shakespeare once wrote that it is a burden to wear the crown, and this sentiment rings particularly true when one is king over a forest teeming with woodland creatures, each with their unique purposes and desires.

Title Impression: Pet Clash initially seems puzzling as I had imagined a battle arena for pets. However, upon closer inspection, it turns out to be a Strategy Game (SLG) where players take control of their own destiny. It appears that the game begins after you are evicted by a demanding king who allegedly turned down your offering of fish.

If you find this concept slightly peculiar, that’s because it indeed is unique – The game titled Pet Clash places you in the role of an agitated simian on a mission for vengeance. It appears that you’re pursuing a crown, and given that your charming character bears a striking resemblance to the legendary Monkey King from Journey to the West, it seems this tale might be subtly inspired by or a modern take on how our monkey hero acquired the “King” in his title.

In simpler terms, instead of embarking on an epic tale like Sun Wukong’s, you’re essentially collecting resources to establish your own kingdom from the ground up. However, what might seem peculiar is the ability to recruit a variety of “pets” from the Tavern for your journey. Despite the oddity, the appealing graphics and adorable character designs easily compensate for this quirkiness.

In essence, you’ll be catching fish to swim, chopping trees for firewood, and grilling the catch for various chores and constructing your forest realm. Over time, as new characters become available, ranging from a peculiar chicken sporting a garlic clove to a cat reminiscent of Puss in Boots, you can delegate these Pets to specific duties to maintain your operations smoothly.

Battles are a casual, relaxed, and entirely leisurely activity where, as you advance your Pets’ levels and enhance their skills, you can also improve efficiency to ensure the prosperity of your domains remains stable.

This game might not offer something entirely new in terms of gameplay, but what truly captivates me is the cast of characters. I must admit, their names are simply hilarious! For example, consider Garlic Chicken and High Horse. Frankly, whoever came up with these names for these “Pets” should be given a bonus.

So, how do you play Pet Clash?

Well, it’s on Early Access according to Google Play in my region, but it’s actually in open beta according to the official
Facebook
page. It’s hard to believe Pet Clash is from the same studio that birthed
Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat
given the completely different genre, but since it’s got an adorable shiba inu chonk as its app icon, I am all for it.
