Ahead of the Game – Sonic Blitz is a speedy card battler with familiar faces and equally familiar mechanics

  • Collect Sonic-themed cards and deploy them onto the battlefield
  • Open foil packs to add to your collection
  • Dash through enemy force fields to win

Greetings and welcome to Ahead of the Times! Here we give you an exclusive look at a game that’s not yet officially released but can already be played by you. This series allows you to get early access to games through various means such as Soft Launch, Open Beta, Demos or other similar methods.

I’ve had a fondness for card battle games from the start, so I was thrilled when a Sonic-themed one emerged. And with fast three-minute matches reminiscent of Marvel Snap and collectible card packs shimmering like those in the Pokemon TCG Pocket, I’d be more than happy to participate!

The Sonic Blitz game exceeded all my expectations, primarily due to its thrilling Dash feature that brings the cards placed on the track to life following each turn. As my esteemed podcast companion Will correctly noted, this dynamic is reminiscent of Card Wars from Adventure Time.

I’d eagerly charge toward my adversary’s stronghold, gradually eroding their protective shield until their health points reach the end, and each card I play brings its unique attack, hit points, and special abilities into play, just as expected.

Fans of the Sonic series will recognize a nostalgic atmosphere as various iconic spots like Green Hill and Chemical Plant pop up briefly in the game.

Regarding the cards, you’ll obtain them by earning foil packs at different stages of your advancement. Each card showcases well-known characters from the Sonic universe and his companions.

Similarly to the Marvel Snap, you too can now collect cosmetics for your cards. Who wouldn’t be excited about adding a stunning new border to their collection?

So, how do you play Sonic Blitz?

While it’s still only in
soft launch in the Philippines
for now, I don’t doubt that Rovio will roll this out across more regions soon ahead of its official launch.

As a gamer, it feels like I’m only dueling against AI opponents and Sonic right now, due to the restricted access to regions. It seems they’re giving me a bit of a break, making my victories feel almost too effortless. But hey, I’ll take these easy wins while I can, pretending I’m some kind of dashing, invincible speedster! I can only imagine things getting tougher once more regions are open, but for now, let me bask in this illusion of my supreme gaming skills as I dash headlong into battle, just like the cool Sonic himself!
