AI Creates An American Dad Trailer Set In The 1950s & It's Perfect

As a seasoned gamer and a lifelong fan of animation, I’ve seen my fair share of pop culture crossovers, but this one takes the cake! DemonFlyingFox has outdone themselves with their latest project – an AI-generated 1950s “American Dad” trailer.

The AI-focused YouTuber DemonFlyingFox has updated classic cartoon shows for a modern audience by giving them a more lifelike appearance. They’ve already transformed popular culture favorites like “South Park” and “Bojack Horseman”, and their next project is the eccentric, patriotic animated series “American Dad.”

In a style reminiscent of both “Bewitched” and “Mad Men,” this rendition of “American Dad” depicts Stan Smith sporting a Don Draper-esque appearance, albeit with his signature weapons, edgy demeanor, and superior physical condition. The rest of the Smith family members are convincingly portrayed, especially Steve Smith with his glasses. However, the standout character is their eccentric housemate, Roger the alien, who adds an “unusual” touch to the family dynamic as described by the narrator.

I, as this peculiar gaming character named Roger, embody everything you’d imagine a 1950s alien to be: bulging eyes and elongated limbs. But let me tell you, my disguises in “American Dad” are nothing compared to the spectacle of seeing these outfits on a genuine extraterrestrial being like myself! Imagine, if you will, the iconic Roswell alien image, but picture him sporting a blonde wig and a pink blouse instead. Quite the sight, isn’t it?

Plenty of supporting characters also appear

In this 1950s AI “American Dad” teaser, it’s not just the Smith family that make an appearance. We also get a glimpse of what Jeff Fischer, Hayley Smith’s stoner boyfriend, would look like in real life, complete with his signature bucket hat. However, one potential issue with this trailer is that AI Jeff appears to be far too old for Hayley, given the rapid aging effects of smoking, making their relationship in the show a bit unsettling.

Discussing something unusual, this AI-generated “American Dad” preview provides a glimpse into what Principal Lewis might appear as in reality. While there’s no issue with the depiction itself, the AI chose to portray the eccentric teacher in an unexpected manner – wearing only red underwear and carrying an AK-47. Despite the questionable attire, his face seems accurate to the character. Interestingly, much like the AI-rendered Stan, Principal Lewis appears more muscular than his animated counterpart in this representation.

As a gaming enthusiast, I must say that the most captivating aspect of the trailer lies in how convincingly they’ve depicted Avery Bullock, Stan’s boss at the CIA, in real life. In the animated series, Bullock is brought to life by none other than the esteemed Patrick Stewart, and it’s quite striking how the AI-generated characters bear a strong resemblance to the veteran British actor. Watching this trailer has ignited my curiosity about what a live-action version of “American Dad” with Stewart as Bullock might look like.

American Dad already poked fun at the 1950s

Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “American Dad”, delved into the 1950s era well before this trailer was made. In an episode titled “American Dad Graffito”, Stan Smith develops a fascination for a themed restaurant and endeavors to bring the 50s back to his town, Langley Falls. Predictably, events spiral out of control, leading to a knife fight with a teenager and other complications that Stan must deal with. However, these consequences are skillfully avoided due to a grand musical number in the finale titled “We Didn’t Know It Was Wrong”, which showcases all the questionable behaviors from that time that people engaged in despite them being socially unacceptable.

While “American Dad” might not have its best episode in your books (it’s not even among our top 25), the musical number “We Didn’t Know It Was Wrong” stands out, particularly for the amusing scene of Stan sporting a greased-up hairstyle and cigarettes tucked in his sleeves. The story unfolds with Stan accidentally wrecking his cherished diner during a misguided Fonzie-style car race. It turns out that he had an emotional attachment to the place because he spent quality time there with Hayley when she was younger.
