At a tender age, Aimee Lou Wood nurtured a passion for acting. Following a course at the Oxford School of Drama, she was admitted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2017. During her student days, she participated in numerous stage plays, but it was in 2016 that she made her professional debut as a cast member of the Almeida Theater’s production, Mary Stuart, in London, where she worked for a year. Subsequent roles in stage plays followed, culminating in Aimee Lou Wood landing her breakout role in the 2019 Netflix series, Sex Education. Since then, she has been a screen actor to keep an eye on.
2022 saw my nomination for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Rising Star Award, signaling that my role in “Sex Education” was merely the beginning, and I was poised to take on more remarkable roles. My subsequent stint in the BBC’s hit comedy series, “Daddy Issues“, marked the highest launch of a comedy series since 2022. Hot on its heels came my much-loved performance in “The White Lotus”. It’s high time we delved into all the projects I’ve been involved with so far.

Seize Them! (2024)
In the era of the Dark Ages, the story Seize Them! unfolds around Queen Dagan (played by Aimee Lou Wood), a haughty monarch whose pride leads to her downfall and exile as a commoner. Here, she joins forces with a former servant turned scavenger, and one of her faithful servants, Shulmay, in an attempt to regain her throne. Queen Dagan grapples with her past, but finds herself learning very little along the way.
Swing and a Miss for the Talented Wood
Among the options on this list, we’d recommend skipping “Seize Them!” as it falls short despite Aimee Lou Wood’s versatile skills in both comedy and drama. Unfortunately, the script is lackluster, making it hard to shine even for a talented actor. Medieval comedies appear to be a challenging genre due to its broad audience requirements, and this production’s reliance on immature humor doesn’t hit the mark. Visually, the film seems more like a low-budget TV production rather than a cinematic experience; it’s unfortunate that such talent was wasted in its creation.

Uncle Vanya (2020)
Uncle Vanya is one of the renowned plays written by playwright Anton Chekhov. First published in 1898, it has been staged numerous times on stages across the globe. The storyline revolves around a retired university professor and his young wife who travel to a tiny rural community that was left to him by his late first wife, which serves as the source of their livelihood.
An Insightful Look into Wood’s Theater Days
Apart from its multiple cinematic adaptations, “Uncle Vanya” has been staged numerous times, with one such instance occurring in 2020 when Conor McPherson’s stage production at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. The cast was then summoned to record and theatrically distribute the play. In this specific performance, Aimee Lou Wood portrays Sonya, the daughter of the main character and his first wife. For her role, she received a nomination for Best Actress in a Play at the Stage Awards and was the second runner-up at the Ian Charleson Awards.

Wood Gives a Memorable Supporting Role in This Popular Biopic

Living (2022)
In the 2022 movie “Living,” the part played by Miss Margaret Harris contributed to Oliver Hermanus’ film earning a nod for Best Supporting Performance at the British Independent Film Awards. This production, inspired by the 1952 Japanese film “Ikiru” and Leo Tolstoy’s 1886 novel “The Death of Ivan Ilyich,” also showcased Bill Nighy in a significant role that netted him an Academy Award nomination.
An Award-Winning Performance from Wood
This story revolves around Rodney Williams, an elderly bureaucrat working for the London County Council, who has been living a monotonous life. However, things take a drastic turn when he receives a grave medical prognosis. With his past filled with unfulfilled moments, an encounter with a vibrant ex-colleague sparks a desire within him to find purpose in the remaining time of his life. In this highly praised production, Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton are supported by Alex Sharp, Tom Burke, Adrian Rawlins, Hubert Burton, and Oliver Chris.

Daddy Issues (2024 – Present)
Following a one-night stand resulting in pregnancy, Gemma (Aimee Lou Wood) finds herself in need of support. This unexpected event leads her to live with her divorced father, Malcolm (David Morrissey), for assistance. Despite sharing a roof, their living arrangement is strained due to a clash in lifestyles, age gap, and lingering issues, making it less than perfect.
Wood Shines in This BBC Comedy Series
The heartwarming comedies that strike the perfect balance are always a delight for fans of the genre. In Daddy Issues, Wood shines brightly, exuding an unconventional appeal that many will find familiar. This exceptional British comedy spans six episodes, each lasting 20 minutes, making it shorter than some of Wood’s other projects. However, in these brief moments, she delivers one of her finest comedic performances yet; the series is scheduled for a second season in 2025.
3
The White Lotus (2024 – Present)
The White Lotus has gained significant cultural traction, showcasing an expansive roster of acting talent in an anthology-style presentation. The program delves into the lives of the affluent and those within their orbit, with each season unfolding at distinct resort destinations. Through the use of satire and a multifaceted ensemble cast, it skillfully delivers compelling television that seamlessly blends humor and drama.
Wood Manages to Stand Out Among an Ensemble Cast
In terms of project quality, The White Lotus would undoubtedly be our number one pick. Aimee Lee Wood shines among the Season 3 cast, with her character Chelsea earning favor from fans due to her optimism and warmth. Her on-screen chemistry with boyfriend Rick (portrayed by Walton Goggins) has been a standout aspect of Season 3, as they complement each other superbly. However, despite Wood’s outstanding performance in The White Lotus, the ensemble cast slightly diminishes the impact on her career-defining role.
2
Sex Education (2019-2023)
In this Netflix series penned by Laurie Nunn, we follow Otis, a teen from Moordale Secondary School who’s somewhat introverted and has a mom who’s a sex therapist. Leveraging his unique knowledge and the scant resources at school, Otis and his classmate Maeve establish a sex advice clinic. This venture soon becomes quite popular. Yet, complications arise when Otis finds himself falling for his business partner.
Wood’s Breakthrough Performance Still Stands Tall
In 2019, the show “Sex Education” was warmly received by both critics and viewers. It boasts impressive performances from actors such as Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, and Wood, to name a few. In “Sex Education,” Wood portrays Aimee Gibbs, a student at Moordale Secondary School and Maeve’s closest friend. Remarkably, Wood was awarded the British Academy Television Award for Best Female Comedy Performance for her exceptional role in this series.

Toxic Town (2025)
Based on true events, the film Toxic Town tells the story of three mothers from the UK’s East Midlands who lived in Corby. This town faced health issues due to genetic defects traced back to the mishandled closure of a steel mill, which resulted in contamination of the environment. The movie recounts the events that unfolded and the protracted legal battle that lasted until 2009 – more than two decades after the initial discovery of the issue during the ’80s and ’90s.
Wood’s Best Dramatic Role to Date
As a die-hard film enthusiast, let me express my admiration for Jodie Whittaker’s exceptional performances in the gripping limited series “Toxic Town.” The chilling intensity she delivered on the stand during the climax is simply unforgettable and one of the many reasons this series ranks so high on our list.
However, it’s her portrayal of Tracey, a mother grappling with a series of birth defects in her child, that truly stands out. Whittaker infuses her character with raw emotional depth, dramatic flair, and captivating charm – qualities that have earned her widespread acclaim.
Jodie Whittaker is not the only one who delivers an outstanding performance; her co-star, also deserving of praise, brings an equal amount of engagement to the table. The emotional odyssey of “Toxic Town” becomes a compelling watch for fans of either actress, making it a must-see for all cinephiles.
