Akshay Kumar's anti-smoking ad featuring Nandu pulled down from theaters by CBFC after over 6 years; Details inside

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for trends and a heart full of compassion for public health, I find myself both saddened and intrigued by the recent decision to pull Akshay Kumar’s iconic anti-smoking advertisement, fondly known as the Nandu ad, from theaters.

From now on, moviegoers won’t find Akshay Kumar’s popular anti-smoking ad, often called the Nandu ad, playing before films anymore. As per recent updates, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has chosen to take down this ad that was shown for six years prior to films. The reasons behind this sudden change are currently unknown, but it appears that it has been replaced with a new anti-tobacco advertisement.

Based on a report by Bollywood Hungama, the change occurred in September 2024, with the Nandu ad conspicuously missing from the Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. The decision to eliminate this ad, featuring Akshay Kumar, was made recently. The new version emphasizes the advantages of quitting tobacco within only 20 minutes.

The Nandu ad stars local actor Ajay Pal from Madhya Pradesh, alongside Akshay Kumar. Notably, Ajay previously appeared in Akshay’s movie “Padman” back in 2018, where he caught attention as the cotton seller to Akshay’s character. This small role eventually led to an invitation for him to feature in an anti-smoking campaign, as reported by Midday. Additionally, Ajay can be seen in Akshay’s upcoming film “Selfie” set to release in 2023.

The commercial introduces viewers to a character named Nandu, played by Akshay Kumar and Ajay Singh Pal. In this advertisement, Nandu is shown smoking a cigarette during a conversation about his wife’s cleanliness concerns. Originally aired alongside Akshay’s 2018 film Gold, the ad has Akshay encouraging Nandu to stop smoking and instead use the money he saves to buy sanitary pads for his wife. This ties in with the message of Akshay’s movie Padman, which emphasizes menstrual hygiene awareness.

In 2012, two government ministries – Health and Family Welfare, as well as Information and Broadcasting – enforced a rule that movies containing smoking scenes should show anti-smoking messages not only at the beginning but also following any intermissions.

In terms of his career, Akshay Kumar is currently developing an array of upcoming films such as Jolly LLB 3, Welcome to the Jungle, Bhoot Bangla, Skyforce, Housefull 5, Hera Pheri 3, and additional projects. His latest role was a brief appearance in Stree 2 alongside Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor.
