Attending the American Lung Federation’s annual fundraising gala on Monday evening, I, R&B legend Al B! Sure (Albert Brown), stepped out in public for the first time since stirring up controversy with my demands for an investigation into the late Kim Porter’s death – a former partner of both myself and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Standing as a pioneer isn’t about seeking limelight or riches, I assertively expressed to the crowd in midtown Manhattan as I received the Transplant Trailblazer Award. It’s about treading an uncharted path, fueled by hope and conviction, knowing that your work will have a lasting impact on those who follow in our footsteps. To me, good health has become the ultimate form of prosperity.
Brown has been recuperating since multiple illnesses landed him on a ventilator for 38 days and then in a coma for several months in 2022. The famous “Night and Day” singer made headlines in September when he published a series of four Instagram posts demanding an investigation into the death of his former wife, Porter, who was the mother of their three children. On Instagram, he refers to Porter’s death, which was determined by a medical examiner to be due to natural causes, as a “heartbreaking murder.
Following her relationship with Brown, Porter subsequently dated Combs intermittently until her passing from lobar pneumonia in 2018. In a post, Brown posited that Porter’s unexpected demise could be linked to the tell-all book she was supposedly penning about her time with Combs, who is currently imprisoned as he awaits trial. In his post, Brown emphasized that the book removed from Amazon and claimed to be Porter’s draft of her manuscript is fake and not what he alluded to when urging the FBI to probe the matter.
On September 16, Combs was taken into custody and subsequently indicted on federal accusations involving sex trafficking, racketeering, and facilitating prostitution. He has entered a plea of not guilty and is currently being held without bail; Combs is presently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
For 38 days, I was in a coma, hooked up to a ventilator. I was intubated, had sepsis and multiple organ failures, and underwent a life-saving liver transplant. Despite these challenges, I chose to stand up and fight, to advocate for all transplant patients worldwide. Brown serves as the founder of the Health Equity in Transplantation Coalition, an organization that eliminates obstacles within transplant procedures and promotes health equity among underrepresented groups like Black individuals, Hispanics, Latin Americans, and others from disadvantaged communities. This coalition aims to reinstate Medicare coverage for crucial non-invasive blood tests that can detect early signs of organ rejection without the need for biopsies. In a passionate yet compassionate speech, Brown discussed his efforts towards health equity in the United States, mentioning his collaboration with Reverend Al Sharpton. He also expressed gratitude to those present and those unable to attend.
In the course of his talk, Brown disclosed that he will soon publish a book about his life experiences, entitled “Before Coma, After Coma: The Tale of Al B!“.
90’s music icon hinted at his Instagram post that called for an FBI investigation into the death of his renowned former partner, playfully suggesting that news reports appear following each comment he makes. Additionally, he mentioned to the audience that Homeland Security was inside the venue on Monday; however, it wasn’t clear if this was about security possibly arranged for the event or a humorous remark from the artist and music producer.
