As a movie buff with a deep appreciation for the artistry and longevity of Hollywood legends, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe when listening to Al Pacino‘s harrowing account of his brush with death due to Covid-19. It’s both heartening and humbling to learn that the iconic actor not only survived but also gained profound insights into the nature of mortality.
Legendary actor from Hollywood, famous for Scarface, recounted the time he experienced being clinically dead following an adverse response to steroid treatment for Covid-19. In a conversation with The New York Times, he reminisced about his brief encounter with death in 2020 when he contracted the coronavirus.
Over the past four years, numerous individuals have succumbed to the virus, but fortunately for Pacino, he wasn’t among them. However, he did share profound insights about his encounters with what is often referred to as “the other side,” or more accurately, the absence of such an experience. The Academy Award-winning actor elaborated on this topic by saying:
Initially, it seemed like you were present, but then you weren’t. A thought crossed my mind: Incredible, even your memories are absent. You possess nothing at all. It was an odd mixture, like porridge. What transpired next was quite unexpected. I felt unusually unwell, and soon developed a fever, leading to dehydration. Consequently, I requested assistance to have a nurse administer fluids. I remained in my house, and subsequently lost consciousness. My heart stopped beating, there was no pulse.
Within just a few short minutes, an ambulance had pulled up outside my house. Inside, there were approximately six paramedics in my living room, along with two doctors who wore unusual space-like outfits. It was quite startling to wake up and find myself surrounded by them. Everyone seemed to be focusing on me, and they announced, “He’s back. He’s here.
Al Pacino Says That Death is Simply ‘No More.’
Numerous discussions revolve around the topic of death and its aftermath. For numerous individuals, their perspectives on death’s significance stem from religious teachings or a lack thereof; however, Pacino now feels confident that he has uncovered what awaits us beyond life.
“There’s nothing left here. As Hamlet puts it, ‘To live or not to live; A land from which no traveler has ever returned.’ And he says just two words: ‘No more.’ It was simply ‘no more.’ You are gone. I never thought about it before in my life. But actors like to say they’ve died once. What happens when there is no more?
The actor shows no apprehension about death, even after experiencing it once, which seems to have left him unaffected. In his own words, “It’s just how things are.” However, following his ordeal, he has numerous reasons to continue living for a while longer. Since his close encounter with death in 2020, Pacino has been anything but idle. His latest roles include Aldo Gucci in ‘The House of Gucci,’ Mayer Offerman across 18 episodes of the TV series ‘Hunters,’ and Xavier Crane in Michael Keaton’s movie ‘Knox Goes Away.’ With a new baby in his life, and several movies in different stages of production, such as ‘Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness,’ directed by Johnny Depp, and the drama ‘Billy Knight,’ it appears that Pacino is far from slowing down.
