Al Pacino Reveals His Surprising Love for the Animated Icon Shrek

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news about Shrek 5 has me feeling like a kid at Christmas. Having witnessed the evolution of cinema since its inception, it’s truly remarkable to see a project that started as a “punishment” assignment at DreamWorks transform into a beloved pop culture phenomenon.

What’s not to adore about the character of Shrek? The lovable green ogre, voiced by Mike Myers, has taken the world by storm, leaving fans thrilled for the upcoming fifth film in the series, set to hit theaters in July 2026. However, it’s not just internet enthusiasts who declare that “Shrek embodies Love and Life,” as even esteemed A-list actor Al Pacino has expressed his affection for the ogre in an unexpected manner. During a BBC interview to promote his new book, “Sonny Boy: A Memoir,” Pacino surprised everyone by displaying a mobile phone case adorned with a Shrek collage.

“Who would be expecting
Shrek
? Who? It’s mine,” the actor said.

The unexpected incident left everyone, including the journalist, taken aback. After regaining his bearings, the interviewer inquired from Pacino, “Could you clarify why you ‘Shrek-ed’ it?” (a question that might be the most intriguing ever posed by a journalist). Remarkably, the Scarface star’s response turned out to be heartwarming. Pacino disclosed that his youngest daughter had requested access to his phone before the interview, only for her to take it to her room. Upon her return, he discovered his phone filled with images of the beloved ogre from the internet. He elaborated:

My little girl asked me if she could use my phone, to which I obliged. Upon getting it back, there was a picture of Shrek on the screen. She excitedly told me it was Shrek. I replied, “Shrek? Really. Alright sweetheart, let me keep it for now.

Shrek 5 Is Finally Happening!

After long bouts of excitement, whispers, and misleading speculation, fans received the long-awaited news when DreamWorks declared that Shrek 5 is indeed being produced. Some fans were disappointed by the prolonged development process, as the movie won’t hit theaters until July 2026. However, most of the fan community were grateful for their wishes coming true. In fact, two years before its release, the news was disclosed in July of this very year. The announcement further confirmed that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona) will all be returning to their roles for the fifth full-length film.

In the year 2001, the film Shrek made its debut, and it had an amusing backstory: some animators at DreamWorks who weren’t meeting expectations were tasked with working on this fairytale-comedy production. This assignment was referred to internally as “getting Shreked.” To everyone’s surprise, Shrek turned out to be a massive success, raking in $267.7 million at the domestic box office. It even ranked as the fourth highest-grossing film of 2001.

Three years after the original, some people felt that Shrek 2 surpassed it in quality. Unfortunately, when Shrek the Third was released in 2007, it didn’t quite live up to expectations as the concluding film for the series. Despite being a financial success, the third movie received mixed reviews, leading many to believe that it had ended any prospect of a fourth installment. However, the enduring popularity of Shrek prevailed, and Shrek Forever After was released in 2010. Similar to its predecessor, this final film also generated mixed reviews but continued to perform well at the box office.

Shrek 5
is scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States on July 1, 2026.
