The news of Cumming’s comeback coincides with the unveiling that Doctor Who Season 2, also known as the 15th season of the contemporary era, is set to premiere on television schedules on April 12, 2025 at 12 am PT / 3 am ET. Similar to the 60th anniversary specials and the previous season, it will be available for streaming exclusively with a Disney+ subscription, except in the United Kingdom. In the second episode, Cumming’s voice can be heard as Mr. Ring-a-Ding.

I’m totally in favor of Alan Cumming taking on the role of a chaotic cartoon character, much like Miss Minutes from Loki. The Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, has encountered and handled countless bizarre occurrences throughout his long journey across time and space in the TARDIS. However, I can’t help but think that even a living cartoon would be one of the strangest encounters yet. My curiosity is piqued now: will this character, known as Mr. Ring-a-Ding, develop consciousness independently or will it be a deity from the Pantheon who brings him to life?
In the upcoming storyline, The Doctor will encounter Mr. Ring-a-Ding, a new character named Belinda Chandra, portrayed by Varada Sethu who previously played Mundy Flynn in the episode “Boom”, and other challenges. Upon meeting Belinda, it’s The Doctor’s responsibility to guide her back to Earth. However, their return is hindered by an enigmatic force, leading them through perils, adversaries, and fears of unprecedented scale. The troubling cartoon character of Alan Cumming has also been added to the mix.
Once more, the second season of Doctor Who is set to start on April 12th, with fresh episodes coming out each week. Millie Gibson will return as Ruby Sunday, but we’ll have to wait and see how often she interacts with The Doctor throughout the new season. Joining Alan Cumming this season are Jonah Hauer-King, Archie Panjabi, Rose Ayling-Ellis, and Christopher Chung as special guest stars.
