Skydance has found its Fortune.
In a competitive landscape, the company is currently discussing terms for acquiring the rights to produce “Fortone”, an action-packed adventure film featuring Alan Ritchson as the lead character, Reacher.
Pending finalization of the contracts, Neil Widener and Gavin James, who are behind the nearly billion-dollar-earning “A Minecraft Movie”, will pen the script based on their original short story. Jerry Bruckheimer, renowned for his expertise in globe-trotting adventures like those depicted in films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “National Treasure”, will take on production duties, along with Ritchson.
Previously, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Ritchson under the direction of Guy Ritchie in last year’s action-thriller, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” In our upcoming project, “Fortune,” it’s Ritchson who takes center stage.
The specifics are being tightly guarded, yet the project has been likened to a blend of “Memento” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Skydance did not comment on the dealmaking.
Andrew Schneider will serve as executive producer on the project. This marks another significant step forward for Ritchson, who has already achieved considerable success in television production with “Reacher,” Amazon’s action-adventure series that has been the most streamed original show of the year for the company and ranks among the top three of all streaming shows. The third season of this popular series was released earlier this year and also ranks among Prime Video’s top three shows of all time.
The actor, represented by WME and Hansen Jacobson, has been expanding his filmography over the past few years, featuring in 2023’s “Fast X” as well as the previously mentioned “Ungentlemanly Warfare.” He is set to appear in the upcoming project “Counting Miracles,” an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel currently being developed by Amazon MGM.
Film legend Bruckheimer, represented by CAA, remains as busy as always. He’s gearing up for the launch of one of the summer’s potential blockbusters, F1, the Formula 1 racing film starring Brad Pitt and directed by Joseph Kosinski. Furthermore, he’s constantly working on new ventures: his latest original project is Fortune, following a significant Apple deal for an unnamed UFO conspiracy thriller that will reunite him with Kosinski. This isn’t all; he’s also working on fresh installments of Pirates and Treasure at Disney, another Bad Boys at Sony, another Top Gun at Paramount, among other projects in the works.
Widener and James’ “Minecraft” film debuted to a staggering $163 million, setting a new benchmark as the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever made. The movie has since surpassed the $930 million mark in earnings. Currently, they are working on adapting the Sony/PlayStation video game franchise “Jak and Daxter,” with Ruben Fleischer set to direct.
Previously, these prolific writers had been engaged in crafting various follow-ups. These included a continuation of “San Andreas” for New Line, a project based on “Hot Wheels” for Warner Bros. and Mattel, a spinoff of “Beyblade” for Paramount, as well as an initial script for “Now You See Me 3”, along with numerous other screenplays.
The duo is repped by CAA, Untitled, and Johnson Shapiro.
