In a new twist, the television adaptation of “Reacher” on Prime Video, based on Lee Child’s bestselling book series, continues to astonish viewers with its exceptional action sequences. As Season 3 debuts this week, it appears the program is setting new heights. Nevertheless, there’s one specific scene that has actor Alan Ritchson yearning for a bit more creative liberty from the books.
In Season 3 of the series, Jack Reacher delves deep into a formidable criminal network while addressing lingering issues from his past. In Episode 3, titled “Number 2 With a Bullet,” Reacher finds himself trapped in a fortified residence with no means of escape without being discovered. To connect with a modest DEA task force assisting him, he devises a stealthy plan that involves slipping through the backyard and swimming across perilous waters. His daring getaway leads him to scale towering cliffs, reach the sea, shed his clothes down to his underwear, pack them away in a sack, and leap into the water. He subsequently emerges and encounters Susan Duffy, portrayed by Sonya Cassidy.
Although the scene highlights Reacher’s remarkable strength and sharp intellect, Ritchson feels that the production could have used more creative freedom for this particular segment. He mentioned in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that filming this underwater sequence was particularly challenging.
The water work proved challenging. Crawling over those freezing, damp rocks without any clothing on wasn’t exactly enjoyable, not even for the spectators – yet we persevered because of our passion for the program.
After finishing the book and appreciating it, there was a particular scene that made me think, “I wish we could bypass that part”. Perhaps Reacher merely walks across the lawn, or he remains on the grass. However, surprisingly, we constructed much of that sequence in an enormous indoor swimming pool. We even installed a wave-maker! I had professionals who have worked on sets worth $400 million, like Aquaman, visit and they were astounded, saying, “I’ve never seen anything like this for a water stunt.” So yes, it was quite a spectacle.
‘Reacher’ Season 3 Already Has a Near-Perfect RT Score
The initial season of “Reacher” was showered with critical appreciation and boasts an impressive 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally agreed that fans of the novels would appreciate this faithful adaptation. The second season exceeded the first, receiving a remarkable 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise directed towards Ritchson’s captivating portrayal of the hero and his ability to deliver high-impact action sequences with a clever nod to the audience. As of now, Season 3, airing new episodes weekly on Prime Video, has pushed even further ahead with an almost perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating of 97%.
The series’ dedication to faithfully adapting Child’s novels has significantly contributed to its triumph. In season 3, drawn from the book “Persuader,” Reacher finds himself immersed in a sprawling criminal network while simultaneously attempting to save an undercover DEA informant. The emergence of Paulie, the novel’s secondary villain, portrayed by Olivier Ritchers, introduces an additional element of mystery and thrill. The action scenes are more gripping than before, and the characters exhibit a depth and complexity that captivates viewers.
As we move forward, there are five more episodes left in Season 3 of Reacher. With its rising popularity, Ritchson’s captivating portrayal of a powerful hero and its knack for blending gripping action with strong character progression, the show’s future looks promising. In fact, it has managed to bring in $279 million in subscriber revenue for Amazon Prime Video, according to a report from Parrot Analytics, which suggests that the streaming service is likely to commission more seasons in the near future.
