Alan Ritchson’s Reacher Series May Be Getting A Spinoff, But I’m Not Sure That’s A Good Idea

As a long-time fan of Jack Reacher and Lee Child’s masterful storytelling, I must admit that Alan Ritchson has truly embodied the larger-than-life character we all know and love. However, when it comes to expanding the universe with spinoffs, I find myself hesitating like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Actor Alan Ritchson fits perfectly for the role of Jack Reacher, a challenging character to find given the author Lee Child’s detailed descriptions in his novels. Even Tom Cruise might agree! So far, Ritchson has portrayed Reacher in two seasons of “Reacher” on Prime Video, with a third season expected in 2025. However, there are rumors that the Jack Reacher universe could be growing… but I think they should concentrate on the main series first before exploring new territories.

According to Deadline’s sources, Nick Santora, executive producer and showrunner of Reacher, is currently working on a spinoff series titled Neagley. This potential new series would center around Frances Neagley, Jack Reacher’s trusted ally, who was portrayed by Maria Sten in the original series. At present, Neagley is the most significant recurring character within Reacher, making appearances in Season 1 and expanding her role in Season 2. The decision to develop Neagley’s character stems from the Lee Child book that served as the basis for Reacher Season 2, titled Bad Luck and Trouble. This book primarily focused on Reacher’s former Army group, the Special Investigators, and a plot aimed at eliminating them one by one. Neagley played a pivotal role in this book as well as in the Prime Video season.

In contrast to most series, the Jack Reacher books often present a unique aspect: the protagonist, Reacher, seldom appears consistently across stories. Reacher is a nomadic figure who values his freedom on the road more than anything that binds him – even personal connections. While Neagley has been someone Reacher could rely upon over time, the allure of the Reacher series lies in its ability to offer distinct seasons. Each Reacher book offers a fresh take, with settings varying from the Florida Keys to Colorado, and so on.

Alan Ritchson’s Reacher Series May Be Getting A Spinoff, But I’m Not Sure That’s A Good Idea

I think it’s wiser for the creators of Reacher to concentrate on developing the primary show first before considering spin-offs. Characters like Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten, are interesting, but I don’t feel a strong demand for more Neagley-centric stories. Neagley is an integral part of Reacher’s world, but it’s Reacher’s story that captivates us. As of now, there aren’t any standalone Neagley books to base a new series on. With so many compelling Lee Child books available for further Reacher series, why risk diluting the main narrative with spin-offs that lack literary foundations and might detract from the overall power of the main story arc?

Not everything has to be Yellowstone. Not everything is worthy of a Taylor Sheridan expansion. But Reacher appears to be heading down this road. Maria Sten will appear in Reacher Season 3, even though Neagley was not in that book. And the Deadline notes that if Neagley gets off the ground, it’s expected that Alan Ritchson would crossover and play Reacher in the series, for a few episodes. I don’t know. It just feels unnecessary. Make Reacher the best show it can possibly be, and focus on that without trying to milk the show’s success to create other shows for which very few are clamoring.
