In the leading role of the title character, Alan Ritchson has gained widespread recognition through his popular Prime Video series “Reacher”. Now in its third season, this show is adapted from a collection of books by Lee Child. The plot revolves around Jack Reacher, a former Army Military Police officer who wanders across the nation and occasionally gets embroiled in resolving crimes, often those involving extensive conspiracies and crime lords. With merely his possessions and a toothbrush as his only belongings, Reacher rarely stays put for long. However, he remains if there’s justice to be upheld.
Beyond his renowned character in “Reacher,” Ritchson has also made significant appearances in films like “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” “Ordinary Angels,” and “Fast X.” However, before he became the imposing figure of Reacher, Ritchson was part of the highly acclaimed movie “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” over a decade ago. Although he wasn’t the lead actor in the film, his role was significant nonetheless. But considering the film hit theaters 12 years back, it’s understandable if some viewers might not recall.
Who Did Ritchson Play in ‘Catching Fire’?
In terms of the Hunger Games series, the second film, titled Catching Fire, is widely considered exceptional. Following their harrowing experiences in the first games, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) found a semblance of peace within District 12’s Victors’ Village. However, the third Quarter Quell, marking the 75th anniversary of the initial games, served as an opportunity for the Capitol of Panem to once again thrust past victors into the arena. As rebellion began to simmer, those in power needed to suppress it decisively. Ritchson portrayed one such former victor, a ruthless career tribute named Gloss from District 1, a district considerably more affluent than the one we’ve been familiarized with through Katniss.
During his teenage years, Gloss emerged victorious in the 63rd Hunger Games. Being a Career Tribute, he had spent his entire life preparing for these brutal contests, though he probably didn’t see them as such. Coming from one of Panem’s most affluent districts, it was viewed as an honor to take part and uphold the values of the Capitol. Thus, when given the opportunity, he willingly participated. Unlike Katniss, he wasn’t driven by a desperate need to save a sibling. Instead, he chose to participate in the ruthless competition with confidence. However, it was during the Quarter Quell that he was reaped once more, this time along with his sister, Cashmere (Stephanie Leigh Schlund).
As the Quarter Quell approached and took place, Ritchson’s character followed the routine that every tribute must adhere to. He trained, attended necessary interviews, and interacted with other tributes. Indeed, Ritchson delivered his role exceptionally. Yet, it wasn’t the part he initially desired. In truth, there was a more substantial role in the Hunger Games series that the actor aspired to take on, which could have significantly impacted his career trajectory. Regardless, fate tends to steer things towards their intended course.
Ritchson Actually Auditioned for a Different Role in ‘Catching Fire’
Initially, Richson tried out for the significant character of Finnick, a Career Tribute, but ended up playing Gloss instead in “The Hunger Games” series. The part eventually went to Sam Claflin due to age restrictions as Finnick was supposed to be younger. At 30 years old, Richson was told he was too old for the role and might not make it big because of that. However, his fortunes changed when he was cast as Reacher at nearly 40, proving that success can come at any age.
Reflecting on it now, Gloss and Finnick appear to have been ideally chosen for their roles. Claflin is only four years younger than Ritchson, yet many consider him a more fitting choice for the character. Although age was said to be a factor in his not getting the role, imagining Ritchson as Finnick just doesn’t feel right. Yes, he’s handsome and charismatic, but Finnick had a unique quality that Claflin portrayed exceptionally well. If Ritchson had played the part instead, it would have given a completely different impression.
It’s clear that sometimes things fall into place as they ought. If Ritchson hadn’t been chosen for the part of Gloss, it might never have happened for him to land his legendary role as Reacher. Frankly, we can’t imagine what a different cast would have looked like because he perfectly encapsulates that character. It could very well be that without Gloss, viewers wouldn’t have the beloved Reacher they know today. Reacher Season 3 is now streaming on Prime Video. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire can be rented or purchased through Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play.
