Aldis Hodge Promises Surprising Take on James Patterson's Alex Cross in Prime Video Series

As a seasoned movie reviewer with a penchant for detective dramas, I must say that Aldis Hodge’s portrayal of Alex Cross in the upcoming Prime Video series “Cross” is nothing short of captivating. His approach to the character, which delves deeper into Cross’ personal life and vulnerabilities, sets it apart from previous adaptations.

Actor Aldis Hodge embarks on a fresh portrayal of James Patterson’s iconic detective character, Alex Cross, in an upcoming Amazon Prime Video series named “Cross.” In contrast to previous adaptations, Hodge’s interpretation is set to be unique and multi-layered. During an interview with Screen Rant at the New York Comic Con (NYCC), Hodge expressed his enthusiasm for this distinct take on his character.

In my opinion, I view Cross’s portrayal as merely a piece of his complex character, hinting at the richness of his entire universe. If we delve deeper, we wouldn’t just see the cop, but also the father, the family man, the friend, and even the vulnerable individual grappling with unanswered questions.

In the past, the character of the police detective from the books “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider” has been played by Morgan Freeman in movies, followed by Tyler Perry in the 2012 film “Alex Cross.” However, the Prime Video series will delve deeper into the character’s complexities. As for the latest actor to portray this character, he shared, “I get to play a fully-fleshed out individual who is deliberate and may occasionally make a mistake, but he remains truthful.” During the same interview, he further explained:

“And that’s the thing that I love the most.

So, the fact that we get to explore that episode by episode by episode means that the potential is never ever fully exhausted. We have different levels to go. Every episode, every season, there’s more potential to me, and we keep meeting it and keep beating it. So, it keeps me interested, it keeps me full, as an artist. It keeps me satisfied and, honestly, very happy.”

James Patterson Approves of Prime Video’s Cross

It’s understandable that not every author will be completely satisfied with how their work is adapted into screenplays, as Stephen King can attest to with “The Shining.” However, James Patterson, the writer behind the upcoming Prime Video series “Cross,” has expressed his enthusiasm for the grittier detective story featuring Aldis Hodge. During an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast, Patterson shared his approval of the adaptation.

I find the new Alex Cross series on Amazon with Aldis Hodge quite impressive. This is the first adaptation that truly captures a grittier, more authentic portrayal of police work for me. I’m genuinely pleased with how it has been executed.

For those fans of the novels, there is one thing worth noting before sitting down to watch the Prime Video series. While the upcoming show is adapting the character of Alex Cross from the source material, it is not retelling any of Patterson’s stories. Rather, audiences will be treated to something original and without the books to rely on. And the best-selling author is onboard despite some complaints. Patterson discussed the show’s departure from his stories in a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly by saying:

“When someone works on one of my books or characters, I always encourage them to create something fresh and original. Ideally, I wanted the series to stand on its own without relying too heavily on the source material, and it seems like that’s exactly what happened.

The long-awaited release of “Cross” is nearly here! Starting from Thursday, November 14, you can stream or binge-watch all eight episodes on Prime Video. Interestingly, even before the first season’s debut, a second season of “Cross” has already been commissioned.
