Aleph Zero Introduces The First EVM-Compatible ZK-Privacy Layer with Subsecond Proving Times

As an experienced analyst, I believe Aleph Zero’s recent announcements mark a significant step forward in the realm of privacy-preserving blockchain solutions. With their new EVM-compatible ZK-privacy Layer 2 and the upcoming zkOS product suite, they aim to make on-chain privacy virtually instantaneous and accessible to a broader audience.

Aleph Zero announces significant ecosystem advancements: the first EVM-compatible ZK-Privacy Layer capable of generating zero-knowledge proofs in under one second on consumer-grade devices and zkOS, a product suite for seamless integration of on-chain privacy into various Web3 applications.

As a researcher at the Aleph Zero Foundation, I’m thrilled to share that we’ve reached an important milestone in our project: the testnet release of our ZK-privacy EVM Layer 2 solution, which is now live on Arbitrum Orbit through Gelato RaaS. This marks the first instance of an EVM-compatible privacy solution offering subsecond ZK proving times. With this breakthrough, we’re making on-chain privacy almost instantaneous for end-users, significantly enhancing their experience.

Expert: Aleph Zero unveiled its plan for the future development of zkOS, a privacy system based on zero-knowledge proofs that can be used by clients across different blockchains. The goal is to provide Privacy-as-a-Service (PaaS) through smooth integrations with apps on WASM and EVM-compatible networks. By doing so, Aleph Zero expands its ecosystem’s reach to more users of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), marking the initial move towards possible multichain expansion.

Using zkOS, users can carry out confidential transactions and engage with decentralized applications (dApps) while safeguarding their information. This innovation permits the operation of bandwidth-intensive applications, including privacy-focused DeFi platforms, Random Walk Algorithms, Artificial Intelligence, and corporate solutions. By expanding the accessibility of privacy technology, zkOS caters to a larger demographic.

“The challenge of ensuring privacy in the digital world remains unresolved. It’s expensive, intricate, and its applications don’t yet have significant financial rewards. However, with zkOS by Aleph Zero and the zk-privacy EVM layer 2, we intend to address this issue not just within the Aleph Zero community, but also in the wider Ethereum network. The adaptability of Arbitrum Orbit’s infrastructure and our partnership with idOS network contribute to this ambition.” – Antoni Zolciak, Co-founder of Aleph Zero

Aleph Zero’s Substrate-built blockchain, introduced in November 2021, grants developers sub-second confirmation times, accommodates 170 validator nodes, and hosts over 40 external teams developing diverse applications. Notably, this Layer 1 will now function as the Data Availability layer for the EVM Layer 2, its associated applications, and future appchains.

The live testnet for ZK-privacy EVM Layer 2, a new development by the team, is now accessible to developers and pioneers. Notable integrators include Rarible, an NFT company, and an unnamed group focusing on innovative prediction markets. The mainnet launch, intended for developers, is predicted for Q3 2024.

Partnership between Aleph Zero EVM and Gelato results in a ZK-privacy Layer 2 solution on Ethereum called Aleph Zero, which utilizes Arbitrum Anytrust DAC technology for enhanced execution speed, security, and scalability. This innovative setup offers approximately 250ms block times and near-instant transaction finality, enabling the processing of thousands of transactions per second – placing it among the fastest EVM chains available in the market.

As a crypto investor, I’m excited about Aleph Zero EVM’s adoption of Arbitrum Orbits’ advanced web3 scaling solution for building the most sophisticated privacy-enhancing blockchain infrastructure available today. Luis Schliesske, Gelato’s Founder, made this announcement. In the coming years, particularly in 2024 and beyond, I believe that privacy will be a significant trend, as more everyday use cases gain traction in the mainstream crypto world.

The Aleph Zero EVM Layer 2 Testnet, developed by Aleph Zero, offers comprehensive tooling for developers from Gelato and additional infrastructure such as oracles, block explorers, and multi-signature wallets. This results in a flexible and feature-rich development environment.

As a crypto investor, I’m excited about Aleph Zero’s innovative approach to zero-knowledge proofs with their zkOS system. Instead of relying solely on speed and trust like some other projects do, Aleph Zero employs Halo2 and KZG commitment scheme for an optimal balance of both. Although this choice comes with more development work upfront, the rewards are worth it.

Development Roadmap

Today marks the reveal of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) Testnet, with the main network launch scheduled for the third quarter of 2024. This allows developers to deploy applications ready for production use, featuring optional privacy enhancements. By Q3 2024, zkOS Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is anticipated, bringing ZK identity functionalities in conjunction with idOS and support for private transactions on any ERC-20 tokens. Advanced capabilities of zkOS are planned for the first quarter of 2025. For comprehensive information, please refer to the roadmap available on alephzero.org.
