For those Apple TV+ subscribers missing the suspenseful drama of “Severance,” they may find solace in checking out “Murderbot,” a fresh sci-fi series spearheaded by Alexander Skarsgård, debuting worldwide in May. The recently released trailer provides an enticing peek into this amusing thriller about a renegade security system on a quest for life’s purpose, only to discover its true passion lies in watching TV – with 7532 hours of content under its belt and growing! The series also features “The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon,” an intriguing fictional show within the show starring John Cho, Jack McBrayer, Clark Gregg, and DeWanda Wise.
As a movie critic, I can confidently say that when Alexandre Skarsgård’s titular Murderbot isn’t engrossed in channel-surfing marathons of daytime dramas, it’s found tangling with perilous missions that not only justify its menacing moniker but also adhere to its programming. A snippet from the trailer (which I’ve included below) showcases this lethal automaton squaring off against a gargantuan extraterrestrial beast, one that seems to have an insatiable craving for robots and researchers alike. This relentless killing machine stands as a protective barrier between the series’ principal cast and the clutches of the terrifying toothy titan, with Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski owing it their deepest gratitude.
Prior to the trailer’s release, Apple TV+ had already given a sneak peek of Skarsgård in his upcoming television series, continuing his successful stints in shows like What We Do in the Shadows, Succession, and The Stand. In these initial images, he was depicted in a futuristic suit and mask, maintaining a cold, expressionless demeanor. However, the newly surfaced footage reveals that his character can effortlessly take off the face mask whenever needed to establish eye contact and empathize with his emotionally fragile clients, despite being repulsed by their human feelings.
‘Murderbot’ Has Targeted a May Premiere
According to Martha Wells’ popular book series The Murderbot Diaries, the character Murderbot was brought to life by Chris Weitz (Afraid) and his brother Paul Weitz (Little Fockers) under their production company, Depth of Field. This production was carried out for Apple TV+ by Paramount Television Studios, with Andrew Miano serving as an executive producer for Depth of Field, while David S. Goyer and Keith Levine from Phantom Four also served in the same capacity. Additionally, Wells played a role as a consulting producer during the adaptation of her novels into a television series, which are narrated from the perspective of the central cyborg character.
The opening season of “Murderbot” – consisting of ten episodes – is set to debut worldwide on Apple TV+, starting with the first two episodes on May 16, 2025. Subsequent episodes will air weekly every Friday, culminating in a finale on July 11. The Murderbot Diaries saga, penned by Wells, presently includes seven books, with the latest addition, “System Collapse,” published on Nov. 14, 2023. It’s intriguing to contemplate where the series might end and whether it may lay groundwork for additional installments given the wealth of source material available.
