As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the announcement of Noah Hawley’s Alien prequel series, Alien: Earth, has sent chills down my spine and set my pulse racing. Growing up, the original 1979 Alien film left an indelible mark on me, and its sequels have continued to captivate me with their blend of horror and science fiction.
Noah Hawley’s Alien prequel series is finally beginning to take form.
A 30-second teaser for the highly anticipated FX horror series Alien: Earth centers on Xenomorph, a feral and screeching creature — and the main antagonists in the Alien film franchise — that has a ragtag group of soldiers fighting for survival. “In 2120, Mother Earth is expecting,” a voiceover says at the start of the teaser (below), followed by the screeching cries of a blood-dripping, sharp-toothed Xenomorph.
FX’s Alien: Earth will bow in summer 2025 on Hulu.
In the spirit of the title, I’ll be immersed in a world that unfolds on Earth, just on the brink of the 21st century’s end. Interestingly, Ridley Scott himself, a legendary figure in the sci-fi genre, is involved as an executive producer through his Scott Free production company, giving this series a touch of the eerie suspense that made his 1979 space-horror classic so iconic.
In the sci-fi horror series on Hulu, spearheaded by Sydney Chandler, an alien spacecraft is forced to land on Earth. This unexpected event leaves a young woman and a team of tactical soldiers grappling with the discovery of Earth’s most dangerous adversary. As per the plot summary, they stumble upon menacing predators unlike anything they could have anticipated, forcing them into a desperate struggle for survival.
The decision about how to utilize this discovery, as suggested by the series creators, has the potential to dramatically transform our understanding of planet Earth.
Hawley mentioned during an interview in January that the upcoming series delves into themes similar to Scott’s 1979 Alien sci-fi horror movie, such as humanity being caught between its ancient parasitic past and its advanced AI future, both of which threaten our existence. However, unlike Scott’s two Alien prequel films, Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), the series won’t follow their narratives.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley expressed admiration for showrunner Hawley, stating that he has “certainly remained faithful to the original ‘Alien’ storyline”. He added that this is exactly what he hopes for, as long as it keeps the franchise alive. He doesn’t mind if it’s on TV or any other platform. In fact, he’s eager to watch it when he gets home. According to him, these themes are now preserved indefinitely, which is a good thing.
Meanwhile, Hawley expressed his vision for “Alien: Earth” as a multi-season TV series. He stated, “Over the summer, after finishing filming, I told THR that it could very well consume the next ten years of my life. I couldn’t be more pleased with the series we produced. If viewers are looking for a television series set in the world of ‘Alien’, I believe I will deliver something exceptional.
The movie “Earth” boasts an international ensemble with actors like Alex Lawther, Timothy Olyphant, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, David Rysdahl, Adrian Edmondson, Adarsh Gourav, Jonathan Ajayi, Erana James, Lily Newmark, Diem Camille, and Moe Bar-El.
