As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark corners of cinematic history, I can confidently say that Fede Álvarez and Dan Trachtenberg teaming up for an Alien vs. Predator film would be nothing short of a dream come true. Their respective successes in revitalizing the Alien and Predator franchises have proven their ability to deliver thrilling, suspenseful, and visually stunning films that push the boundaries of horror and science fiction.

Director Fede Álvarez, known for his work on Evil Dead, is currently basking in the glory of revitalizing yet another significant horror franchise with Alien: Romulus. Now, he has an intriguing concept for revisiting the controversial spinoff series Alien vs. Predator. Álvarez’s Alien prequel/sequel has received largely positive feedback and is currently leading the box office charts. The director has now shared his thoughts on how he would orchestrate a cinematic showdown between iconic movie monsters, the Alien and the Predator.

At a recent premiere for Alien: Romulus, the filmmaker shared that his concept for Alien vs. Predator would involve him and director Dan Trachtenberg taking on co-directing duties. Notably, Trachtenberg has recently revived the struggling Predator franchise with 2022’s Prey. He elaborated:

“Perhaps this project requires me to collaborate with my friend Dan in a directorial capacity, similar to how Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez worked together on ‘From Dusk Till Dawn.’ I’d take charge of one half, while he handles the other.”

Although comparing it directly to the 1996 action horror film “From Dusk till Dawn” written by Quentin Tarantino isn’t quite right (since he also directed and starred in the movie, with Robert Rodriguez directing), the idea of bringing together these two accomplished directors who have both revitalized their genres is undeniably intriguing. By uniting these filmmakers known for reinvigorating their franchises, they could potentially create a groundbreaking science fiction fusion movie that promises to deliver another cinematic masterpiece.

Perhaps it might serve as a demonstration of too many minds creating the sci-fi horror plot? At present, let’s avoid dissecting and instead envision what Álvarez and Trachtenberg might conjure up when working together.

Could Fede Álvarez and Dan Trachtenberg Make Alien vs. Predator Work?

The comic book series “Alien vs. Predator” from Dark Horse Comics has been brought to life on the big screen twice – initially in 2004, followed by “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” in 2007. Regrettably, neither film managed to fully exploit the concept’s potential. Although they performed decently at the box office, both movies received unfavorable critiques, with “Requiem” receiving particularly harsh reviews that made the violence of the Xenomorph and Predator seem tame in comparison.

As we anticipate whether Álvarez’s wish for an Alien vs. Predator 3 comes true, moviegoers have the opportunity to witness his skill in the earlier franchise with Alien: Romulus. This production features Cailee Spaeny (known for Priscilla), David Jonsson (from Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu. Directed by Fede Álvarez (Don’t Breathe) and written with Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2), audiences can now see how Álvarez handles the Alien series.
