As a movie aficionado who has witnessed the evolution of home video formats from Betamax to streaming, I must say that the retro revival is a delightful throwback to my formative years spent huddled around our family’s bulky VCR. The idea of a major studio like 20th Century Studios backing an Alien sequel on VHS feels almost surreal, reminiscent of the time when I had to rewind tapes carefully to prevent the dreaded ‘eating’ incident.
In an unexpected move, the latest installment in the sci-fi horror legacy sequel series, “Alien: Romulus“, is set for a nostalgic home release, becoming available on VHS, Blu-ray, and DVD. Yes, you heard it right – VHS! Despite the rise of DVDs in 1997, with popular titles like “Twister” and “Goodfellas”, the decline of VHS seemed imminent. However, the format managed to survive until 2005, with movies such as “The Legend of Zorro” and “A History of Violence” marking its end. Interestingly, Witter Entertainment has been releasing newer genre favorites like “Mandy”, “Suitable Flesh”, and “Terrifier 2” on the seemingly deceased format. In fact, “Terrifier 2” had a limited-edition run of tapes available at Walmart!
Similar to how retro gaming titles have gained popularity, it appears that the retro trend is also gaining traction, and this will be evident when Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus is released on Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and DVD on December 3. This release will mirror a limited edition VHS launch, which is quite unusual given that it’s fully supported by 20th Century Studios. Given the film’s retrospective nature, it seems fitting for this release. The influence of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens can be felt throughout Álvarez’s movie. However, it also offers a fresh direction for the franchise.
The operational VHS tape will appear in a Full Screen aspect ratio of 4:3 and feature an English Stereo audio track. However, those who purchase it might find it wiser to keep it in its original packaging. Given its potential future value due to the distinctive cover art by Matt Ferguson, it could become a collector’s item.
The Alien: Romulus VHS Release Looks Wonderfully Vintage
Alien: Romulus showcases the talents of Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, and Isabela Merced (all exceptional actors). The story follows a band of young settlers who aim to pilfer some cryogenic pods from an abandoned space station named Romulus. Unbeknownst to them, the Romulus was once a stopover for a probe that had recently examined the debris of the USCSS Nostromo spaceship. In their exploration, they uncover the exact Xenomorph that decimated the majority of the Nostromo’s crew.
This horror movie is an exhilarating experience, resembling a spooky haunted house story set in space, much like the original classic. It’s packed with action, similar to Aliens, and offers unexpected twists for viewers. However, what truly makes this film captivating might be its exceptional cast, particularly Spaeny who delivers remarkable performances time and again. In fact, Romulus seems to have served as a significant breakthrough for her, establishing her as a financially successful leading actress. For those eagerly anticipating it, Álvarez’s critically acclaimed and commercially successful production is now available for digital rental or purchase.
