Alien: Romulus Officially The Highest-Grossing Horror Movie Of 2024

As a movie buff with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the return of the Alien franchise feels nothing short of electrifying! The box office success of Alien: Romulus has certainly set new standards for horror films this year, and it’s truly impressive to see how it has outperformed even A Quiet Place: Day One.

It seems clear that with the release of Alien: Romulus only three weeks ago, the Alien series appears to have made a successful comeback. The movie has been generating substantial revenue in the horror genre and has become the highest-grossing Alien installment in the horror category for 20th Century Studios this year.

According to John Squires, Editor-in-Chief at Bloody Disgusting, “Alien: Romulus” has become the highest-earning horror film worldwide in 2023, raking in a staggering $285.3 million globally. This surpasses the global earnings of “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which amassed $261.5 million during its entire run. As of now, “Alien: Romulus” has made $90.6 million in the U.S. and $194.7 million from international sales. Notably, the film has done exceptionally well in China, where it has accumulated $93.1 million so far. All this was achieved on a relatively modest budget of $80 million, which is quite economical compared to most industry norms.

Alien: Romulus Was Intended to Be a Hulu Release

In 2021, when the Alien: Romulus project was initiated, it was initially slated to debut on the streaming platform Hulu. However, due to the ongoing recovery of movie theaters following the pandemic, Director Fede Álvarez had agreed to this arrangement. But as production on Alien: Romulus progressed, the improving health of movie-going experiences led to a shift in plans.

“The decision wasn’t made when cinemas were flourishing, but it was clear from the beginning that the film would be a challenging project for a streaming service. I recall sharing with everyone that this movie would be shown in theaters, and there was a great deal of excitement. It felt incredible, even the head electrician seemed excited about it being released in cinemas.”

As a cinephile, I was absolutely blown away by the incredible reception “Alien: Romulus” has received. It notched an impressive 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and managed to secure the second-biggest box office debut for the franchise, raking in $42 million, only behind “Prometheus” ($51 million). What’s particularly exciting is its performance in China, a market that hasn’t been too keen on Hollywood films lately. Apart from “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” which earned an impressive $134 million in China, “Romulus” has been one of the rare Hollywood films to make a mark there. Remarkably, its success is even more surprising than “The New Empire” because it’s not produced by Legendary Entertainment, a Chinese-owned company, but still managed to secure a release in China – something only three other films in the franchise have achieved so far.

Over the long Labor Day weekend, the movie “Alien: Romulus” made approximately $11 million and came in second place. In the United States, it has already earned $90.6 million, surpassing the earnings of its predecessor, “Alien: Covenant.” Domestically, “Alien: Covenant” had only made $74.2 million, while its global earnings totaled $240.8 million.
