As a seasoned moviegoer who’s seen his fair share of alien invasions and intergalactic thrills, I must say that the trailer for Alien: Romulus has me genuinely excited! The franchise has always been a favorite of mine, dating back to the original Ripley-led Alien.
Without Sigourney Weaver’s character, the Alien franchise, particularly Alien: Romulus, still holds strong potential for box office success. In just ten days, director Fede Álvarez’s addition to the series, Alien: Romulus, is set to premiere, and predictions suggest a domestic opening weekend of around $35 million to $50 million (according to Boxoffice Pro). If it manages to reach the higher end of this estimate, Alien: Romulus could achieve the largest domestic opening weekend of all nine Alien movies. The film stars Cailee Spaeny and is shaping up to be an exciting outer space thriller.
2012’s film “Prometheus,” featuring Michael Fassbender who was previously in the “X-Men” series, currently boasts the highest opening weekend earnings of $51 million. Interestingly, while it didn’t quite match the success of “Prometheus,” the latest installment from the franchise, 2017’s “Alien: Covenant,” also performed well during its premiere, earning $36.2 million.
Alien Franchise’s Opening Weekend Numbers Domestically
- Alien ($3.5 million)
- Aliens ($10.1 million)
- Alien 3 ($19.4 million)
- Alien Resurrection ($16.5 million)
- Alien vs. Predator ($38.3 million)
- Alien vs. Predator: Requiem ($10.1 million)
- Prometheus ($51 million)
- Alien: Covenant ($36.2 million)
Can Alien: Romulus Top Franchise’s Best Worldwide Total?
Alien Franchise’s Domestic Box Office Totals Unadjusted for Inflation
Movie | Box Office | Rotten Tomatoes Score |
---|---|---|
Alien | $79 million | 93% |
Aliens | $85.2 million | 94% |
Alien³ | $55.5 million | 45% |
Alien: Resurrection | $47.8 million | 55% |
Alien vs. Predator | $80.3 million | 22% |
Alien vs. Predator: Requiem | $41.8 million | 12% |
Prometheus | $126.5 million | 73% |
Alien: Covenant | $74.3 million | 65% |
Interestingly, although the Alien movies have been financially successful, none have surpassed $500 million worldwide, and since Aliens, they haven’t received universal praise. It’s also worth mentioning that following the release of Alien vs Predator in 2004 — which premiered two decades ago — the Xenomorph has garnered more popularity overseas than in the U.S.
In the thrilling teaser for Alien: Romulus, the formidable Xenomorphs and Facehuggers seem poised to spread terror and procreation. But can this new installment in the sci-fi horror saga surpass or equal the staggering global box office earnings of its most profitable film? The record for highest worldwide gross is currently held by Prometheus ($403.4 million). Another point worth considering is: How much revenue might Deadpool & Wolverine divert from Romulus?
