Sequels for well-received films can be unpredictable, offering both exceptional successes and disappointing failures. This inconsistency arises due to the challenge of expanding upon an original story while ensuring quality, as there may not always be enough material to create something as powerful as the initial work. Striking a balance between speed and quality is crucial in industries like entertainment production.
In light of this, producer Michael Pruss shares some intriguing thoughts regarding the prospect of a sequel to Alien: Romulus, which initially appears puzzling upon first glance.
During an interview at the Saturn Awards with ScreenRant, Michael Pruss provided some insights about the potential sequel to ‘Alien: Romulus’, though his answers seemed somewhat perplexing. Here’s how he put it:
“When asked about the upcoming Alien: Romulus sequel, Michael Pruss shared some intriguing details, but his responses were a bit puzzling. He stated:
In the sequel, Ridley, my cohorts, and I – along with our esteemed colleague Fede – are delving into plans for a new Alien film. While it might not be a direct follow-up to Romulus, it undeniably belongs within the broader Alien franchise we’ve built together.
Romulus 2,” but closer to “Alien: Covenant.” This upcoming film isn’t a direct continuation of “Romulus,” much like how “Covenant” wasn’t a direct sequel to “Prometheus.” Instead, it provides more information about what happened to David and Elizabeth Shaw after the events portrayed in “Prometheus” ended. Recently, producer Ridley Scott shed some light on the production of these sequels. He mentioned that this new film will likely reveal what has transpired since the cameras stopped rolling on “Covenant.
At this point, our project is still in its initial stages, but we’re optimistic that as the months pass, we’ll have some exciting updates to share with you. I can’t provide an exact timeline yet, but rest assured, it won’t be a 25-year wait; it will happen sooner than that. We’re currently collaborating with Fede and Ridley to develop something exceptional, something that will undoubtedly evoke the same response from our audience. Just like Romulus, it was worth the wait, right? People adored it, they embraced it, and creating such a masterpiece takes time. But we’re committed to delivering another great creation to you.
To start off, I’d like to express my gratitude for clarifying that the sequel won’t be delayed for another 25 years. It’s always refreshing to hear about projects moving forward instead of getting stuck in development limbo. The whispers regarding the sequel and Sigourney Weaver’s potential involvement, along with digital de-aging techniques, have certainly piqued my interest. While I must admit that I’d be hesitant if these discussions remain only as rumors, I’m eagerly awaiting more concrete updates on this exciting development.
Aside from the rumors, the director has addressed some of the ‘mistakes’ made in Romulus, and how he plans to avoid repeating those for the sequel. A Romulus sequel definitely has enough content left over from the first movie to be solid, between the new planet that Rain and the rest of the crew is trying to get to, as well as that surprise creature feature in the last act that ruffled some feathers. From the concept art alone, I think this would be a really cool creature to see again.
In summary, it’s reassuring to learn that the potential sequel for the story of Romulus is being carefully crafted, avoiding the pressure to release something quickly to maintain its momentum. Meanwhile, if you share my curiosity about where this film fits in the timeline, we have a handy guide on the Alien movies to help fill in the gaps. For now, I’ll stay patient while waiting for more details to be unveiled.
