As a seasoned film enthusiast with a soft spot for the Alien franchise, I must say that the return of Alien: Romulus has been nothing short of exhilarating. The masterful blend of tension and action it offers is reminiscent of the original Alien and its sequel, Aliens, making it a perfect marriage of the two.
After its release in August, the Alien franchise regained both critical and financial acclaim. The movie had a prosperous run at the box office and is now available digitally. It seems that there are rumors about a sequel, with the original director and two beloved actors set to rejoin the cast.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, I learned about the potential future of the Alien franchise post-Romulus, and I’m thrilled to share some exciting news. Fox Executive Steve Asbell mentioned that they are actively developing an idea for a sequel, though director Fede Álvarez hasn’t officially signed on just yet – but they’re very close!
At present, we are brainstorming a follow-up concept for the movie. Although our agreement with Fede Álvarez hasn’t been finalized yet, it will be soon, and he has an intriguing notion that we are developing. The characters Rain and Andy, portrayed by Cailee Spaeny and David Johnson, were standout performers in the original film. As I ponder their future, I find myself wondering, “Where do audiences desire to see these characters journey next?” Since there will definitely be aliens and terrifying horror sequences, but I am captivated by both of them, I am eager to discover more about their story.
Álvarez has previously mentioned that he and his screenwriting partner Rodo Sayagues have concepts for a sequel to “Romulus” ready, but they prefer to gauge the audience’s response before moving forward with creating a follow-up. Moreover, he expressed a desire not to produce the sequel within the next two years, stating a preference for allowing time between installments. It remains to be seen if Álvarez will adhere to this or if 20th Century Studios may push for an accelerated production timeline.
Alien: Romulus Was the Perfect Marriage of Alien and Aliens
Romulus” has been praised for returning to the original Alien series’ themes of suspense and danger while incorporating exciting action scenes, making it a blend of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. This unique mix has been well-received by both critics and viewers, earning an impressive 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and generating $105.3 million in the U.S. and $350.8 million globally, all on a budget of approximately $80 million.
The movie performed exceptionally well on high-end screens, as IMAX announced that it generated a staggering $40 million worldwide on their screens, making it the top-grossing horror film ever shown in this format. Considering the original plan was to release it exclusively on Hulu without any theater screenings, this is quite an achievement. Thus, it’s no surprise that 20th Century Studios are keen on a sequel and want Álvarez to continue his involvement. Even Scott, after viewing the film, was so taken by Romulus that he felt the director would be contributing to the franchise for a long time to come.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d be excited to delve into an intriguing tale like ‘Alien: Romulus’. This story unfolds in the gap between ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’, following a band of six energetic space colonists who embark on an unplanned expedition to explore a deserted space station for salvage. In this thrilling adventure, we see the return of familiar faces like Spaeny and Johnson, joined by Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.
