‘Alien: Romulus’ Winning Busy Box Office Weekend With $40M-$42M Opening

As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I can confidently say that Fede Álvarez’s Romulus is a thrilling addition to the series that has me absolutely terrified and exhilarated in equal measure! The movie’s box office success, both domestically and internationally, is a testament to its gripping storyline and masterful execution.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that Fede Álvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” has made a chilling entrance, raking in impressive numbers at the box office during its opening week. This latest installment aims to resurrect the beloved franchise, keeping the spirit of terror alive and well!

On Friday, I was thrilled to see my favorite movie of this century claim the number one spot at the domestic box office with an opening weekend haul estimated between $40 million and $42 million. This impressive figure includes $6.5 million earned from Thursday previews. To add to the excitement, it’s the film that dethroned Marvel Studios’ Deadpool and Wolverine from their long-held top spot! What a triumph!

Great news for movie creators – “Romulus” is not only captivating older fans who are familiar with the franchise, but also attracting younger male audiences as well. This development is advantageous for Disney’s film dynasty and the overall summer box office. The film currently boasts an impressive 82% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and has earned a nearly top-tier B+ grade from CinemaScore, which suggests it’s close to setting a new franchise benchmark.

Romulus is also doing well overseas for projected $100 million-plus global opening.

In the eighth chapter of the ongoing “Alien” series, the story unfolds between the happenings of Ridley Scott’s 1979 “Alien” and James Cameron’s 1986 sequel, “Aliens.” (It’s worth noting that Ridley Scott is a producer for this movie titled “Romulus.”) This R-rated production follows a group of young settlers as they discover an abandoned spaceship and face the terrifying presence of the iconic alien creature that has defined the franchise. The cast includes Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, and Spike Fearn.

Initially, it was planned for Romulus to be released directly on streaming platforms like Hulu, which is owned by Disney. However, during the initial filming stage, the studio decided to change the release strategy and opted for a theatrical debut instead.

After spending three straight weekings at the top spot, Deadpool & Wolverine have moved down to second place. However, there’s no need for sympathy towards this irreverent Marvel and Disney production as it has smashed numerous records on its journey to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time globally, unadjusted for inflation.

Under Shawn Levy’s direction and featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” surpassed “Joker” on August 15th, ultimately concluding the day with a worldwide gross of $1.086 billion.

The third installment is projected to bring in approximately $27-$28 million over the weekend, pushing its total U.S. earnings to roughly $545 million.

In its second release, the Sony and Wayfarer Studios’ movie adaption of Colleen Hoover’s popular novel “It Ends With Us” is ranking third. Starring Blake Lively, this film could potentially earn between $24 million and $26 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to almost $100 million by Sunday’s end.

Over its initial seven-day run, a film driven by female audiences grossed $73.7 million, marking the highest earnings this year for a non-sequel movie. The film is experiencing robust repeat viewings, even amidst a tempest in social media about a reported disagreement between Lively and her co-star/director Justin Baldoni. To handle this crisis, Baldoni has enlisted the services of an experienced PR crisis manager.

Universal’s movie “Twisters” is expected to rank fourth in the lineup. It’s now also accessible for premium Video On Demand streaming. Next up is the 15th anniversary edition of Focus Features’ beloved stop-motion film “Coraline”, which Fathom Events will be releasing. This rerelease garnered $5.8 million in just two days, on Thursday and Friday alone.

Number will be updated Sunday morning.
